Chapter 7 - THE MIDNIGHT RESCUE

Inside the stark holding cell at the police precinct, Maya sat on the edge of the narrow cot. The fluorescent lights overhead hummed loudly, casting a sickly yellow glow over the cinderblock walls.
The heavy iron door clicked open.
Detective Reed stepped inside, holding a plastic cup of warm tea and a clean, dry wool blanket.
"Drink this," Reed said, handing her the cup. "And put the blanket around your shoulders."
Maya took the tea, her fingers still stiff from the cold. "Did you find anything, Detective?"
Reed leaned against the wall, taking a deep breath. "I ran Victoria Sterling's financials. You were right, Maya. She's completely broke. She owes $1.2 million to an illegal casino operator in Miami. They put a lien on her luxury apartment three weeks ago."
Maya looked up, hope flickering in her eyes. "Did you tell Mr. Vance?"
"I tried calling his cell an hour ago, but it went straight to voicemail," Reed said, frowning. "I sent a cruiser to the estate to request the server logs from his security team, but—"
Before Reed could finish his sentence, the precinct doors outside rattled. Heavy, rapid footsteps echoed down the hallway.
Arthur Vance burst into the holding area, flanked by his head corporate attorney and two senior police commanders. His suit was rumpled, his hair messy, his eyes bloodshot with tears and fury.
The desk sergeant tried to stop him. "Sir, you can't be back here—"
Arthur ignored him, striding directly up to Maya’s cell. He looked through the iron bars at the thin, shivering girl sitting on the cot holding a wool blanket.
"Maya..." Arthur whispered, his voice cracking with an unbearable weight of remorse.
Maya stood up slowly, her body tense, expecting another wave of accusations.
"Open the door," Arthur commanded the officer, his voice shaking. "OPEN THIS DOOR RIGHT NOW!"
The officer quickly unlocked the cell.
The moment the iron door swung open, Arthur stepped inside. Before Maya could react, the powerful shipping tycoon dropped to his knees right on the dirty concrete floor in front of her.
He pulled the USB drive from his pocket and laid it on the cot, then looked up at her, tears streaming down his face.
"I saw the video," Arthur wept, his hands shaking as he reached out, not daring to touch her without permission. "I saw what she did. I saw what you did. You dove in... you saved my son... and I put my hands on you. I cursed you. I let them lock you in the dark."
Maya stared at him, the tension in her shoulders slowly dissolving as the truth finally broke the night apart.
"Mr. Vance..." she murmured.
"I am so sorry, Maya," Arthur sobbed, bowing his head until his forehead touched her worn shoes. "I don't expect you to ever forgive me. But I swear to God, I will spend the rest of my life making this right. I swear it."
Detective Reed stepped up to the cell, taking the USB drive from the cot. "What's on this, Mr. Vance?"
May you like
Arthur stood up slowly, wiping his face, his eyes suddenly hardening into dark flint.
"It's the video of Victoria Sterling trying to murder my son," Arthur said coldly. "And it's the evidence you need to arrest her for the murder of my wife, Clara."
