Chapter 2 - THE COLD CELL AND THE SILENT TAPE

The gatehouse at the edge of the Vance estate was dark, smelling of motor oil and cold stone. The security guards threw Maya inside and locked the heavy oak door from the outside.
Maya collapsed onto the concrete floor, shivering uncontrollably in her soaked uniform. The damp fabric clung to her skin, but the cold outside was nothing compared to the ice in her heart.
She was twenty-four years old. She had taken the job as a live-in nanny and maid at the Vance estate to pay off the crushing medical debt left behind after her younger brother's heart surgery. For three months, she had poured her soul into caring for baby Leo. Since the death of Arthur’s wife, Clara, in a tragic car accident a year ago, the house had been an altar of grief. Maya had brought life back into the nursery. She sang to Leo, held him through his night terrors, and protected him fiercely.
And now, she was being framed for his murder.
"Why?" Maya whispered into the darkness, wrapping her arms around her knees, her teeth chattering. "Why would Victoria do this?"
The answer came to her like a sudden, terrifying flash of light.
Victoria Sterling was Clara’s elder sister. For months, Victoria had been hovering around Arthur, managing his household affairs, pushing herself into his private life, trying desperately to replace her dead sister as the mistress of the Vance shipping empire. But Arthur had remained emotionally distant, buried in his work and his devotion to his son.
Victoria didn't want the baby. She wanted the Vance fortune. Leo was the sole heir to Clara’s massive trust fund—a fund that would revert to Victoria if the child died or if Arthur was proven unfit to protect him. Maya had been an obstacle because Maya was always near the child, always watching, always protecting.
An hour passed. The sound of rain began to pelt against the small high window of the gatehouse.
Footsteps approached outside. The key turned in the heavy brass lock, and the door creaked open.
It wasn't the police.
Arthur Vance stood in the doorway, backlit by the security lights of the courtyard. He had changed into a dry sweater, but his face was hollow, dark circles carving deep shadows under his eyes.
Maya scrambled to her feet. "Mr. Vance! Please, you have to listen to me—"
"The police are ten minutes away, Maya," Arthur said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. "I came down here to ask you one question. Why? My wife paid for your brother’s hospital care before she died. I gave you a home, a high salary, complete trust. Why would you hurt my son?"
"I DID NOT HURT HIM!" Maya shouted, her voice breaking with raw, agonizing desperation. "Mr. Vance, I swear on my brother's life, I would die before letting a hair on Leo's head be harmed! Victoria is lying to you!"
"Victoria is Clara's sister!" Arthur snapped, his fist slamming against the doorframe. "She loved Clara! She loves Leo!"
"Victoria turned off the safety lock on the stroller!" Maya screamed back, tears hot against her cold cheeks. "She knew I had stepped into the gazebo for ten seconds to grab Leo's blanket. She released the handle! I saw her green dress near the hedges when I turned around! I dove into that pool because he was drowning! Look at the security footage, Arthur! I beg you, just look at the cameras!"
Arthur glared at her, his jaw clenching. "The security cameras in the patio area suffered an electrical short at two o'clock this afternoon. The recording from that hour is completely blank."
Maya froze, her heart plummeting into a dark, bottomless abyss.
Blank.
Victoria hadn't just pushed the stroller. She had tampered with the estate’s main server room beforehand.
A shadow stepped up behind Arthur. Victoria appeared in her emerald green dress, carrying a coat for Arthur, her face masked in deep concern. "Arthur, darling, the police cars are at the front gate. Come inside. You shouldn't be speaking to this dangerous girl without your lawyers present."
Maya looked at Victoria, seeing the cold, reptilian calculation behind her eyes.
"You erased the tapes," Maya whispered, her eyes wide with horror.
Victoria sighed, shaking her head mournfully. "She's delusional, Arthur. Look at her. She's trying to blame the security system now. Please, let the police handle her."
May you like
Arthur looked at Maya one last time. For a fraction of a second, seeing the pure, unadulterated truth in Maya’s desperate eyes, a flicker of doubt crossed his face. But then he looked at Victoria, remembered the empty stroller floating in the pool, and his heart hardened back into stone.
"Take her away," Arthur said coldly, turning his back on her.
