Chapter 1 - THE ACCUSATION ON THE PATIO

The water dripping from Maya Lin’s uniform was ice-cold, but the shock that paralyzed her blood was far worse.

She knelt on the slippery marble tiles beside the infinity pool, her chest heaving, clutching six-month-old Leo to her soaking wet chest. The infant was coughing, coughing up clear pool water, his tiny lungs gasping as he wailed into the humid afternoon air. Maya’s hands trembled, but her grip on the child was absolute. She had not hesitated. The moment she saw the heavy stroller roll toward the deep end, she had sprinted across the patio and thrown her body into the water without a second thought for her own safety.

“She pushed him in!”

The voice cut through the sound of Leo’s cries like a poisoned blade.

Victoria Sterling—the "Woman in Green"—stood at the edge of the patio doors, her silk dress fluttering in the breeze. Her manicured hand was pointed straight at Maya. Her face was a masterpiece of manufactured horror, tears welling in her eyes with practiced, theatrical precision.

The heavy glass doors slammed open. Arthur Vance, the thirty-four-year-old shipping magnate and Leo’s father, rushed out onto the marble deck. His face was pale with panic, his tailored suit jacket open, his eyes wild as he took in the scene: his wet, crying son, the floating empty stroller in the turquoise pool, and Victoria pointing the finger.

"Leo!" Arthur gasped, lunging forward.

Before Maya could speak—before she could explain that Victoria had been standing right next to the stroller when the brake suddenly failed—Arthur reacted to the accusation. Driven by blind panic and raw paternal instinct, he didn't ask questions. He saw the wet maid, heard the frantic scream of his late wife’s sister, and assumed the worst.

Arthur stepped forward and violently shoved Maya away from his son.

Maya lost her footing on the wet marble, hard stone slamming into her hip as she skidded backward. She let go of the baby only because Arthur snatched Leo into his arms, wrapping the infant in his suit jacket.

"Get away from him!" Arthur roared, his voice cracking with rage and fear. "What did you do to my son?!"

"Mr. Vance, no!" Maya cried out, her voice raspy, pool water stinging her throat. "I didn't push him! I jumped in to save him! The brake—someone released the brake!"

"I saw her!" Victoria cried, rushing to Arthur’s side, throwing her arms around him in a display of frantic comfort. "Arthur, I was coming out with the baby's bottle and I saw her manually kick the wheel stopper and shove the stroller! She was smiling, Arthur! She tried to drown your baby!"

"You lying snake!" Maya yelled, struggling to stand up on her trembling legs, cold water pooling around her worn shoes. "You were standing right beside him! You pushed the stroller when you thought I wasn't looking!"

"Silence!" Arthur bellowed, his eyes burning with a terrifying, dark fury as he cradled his sobbing son against his chest. He looked at Maya not as a human being, but as a monster. "I hired you three months ago because you had good references! I trusted you with my wife’s child! And you try to murder him in broad daylight?!"

"Arthur, please, look at me!" Maya begged, taking a step forward, her hands raised in desperate supplication. "Look at my clothes! I dived in! If I wanted to harm him, why would I jump into the deep end to pull him out?!"

"Because you heard me scream!" Victoria cut in smoothly, her voice dripping with venomous deceit. "You realized you were caught! You jumped in to make yourself look like a hero so we wouldn't call the police!"

Arthur didn't listen to another word. He turned toward the two heavy-set security guards who had just burst onto the patio from the side garden.

"Take her," Arthur commanded, his voice cold as iron. "Lock her in the gatehouse until the police arrive. I am pressing charges for attempted murder."

"Mr. Vance!" Maya screamed as the guards grabbed her arms, pinning her wet wrists behind her back. "Check the cameras! Look at the patio security cameras! They will show you the truth!"

Victoria’s eyes flickered with a brief, sinister flash of triumph. She leaned into Arthur’s shoulder, whispering softly, "Oh, darling, don't listen to her crazy ramblings. Let's get poor little Leo inside before he catches pneumonia. I'll call the family doctor right away."

As Maya was dragged roughly across the manicured lawn toward the stone gatehouse, she looked back over her shoulder. Victoria turned her head just enough so Arthur couldn't see, and offered Maya a slow, cold, triumphant smile.

The trap had been sprung. And Maya was the designated sacrifice.
