Chapter 14 - The Architect’s Daughter

The living room felt suffocating, as if all the oxygen had been vacuumed out into the dark night.

I snatched the leather journal from Julian’s hand.

The handwriting on the parchment was undeniably Lily’s.

Her precise, flowing cursive detailed every phase of the project over the past eight years.

Phase One: Selection of the primary host.

Phase Two: Memory restructuring and emotional anchoring.

Phase Three: In vitro synthesis using the Vance proprietary sequence.

Emma wasn't just my daughter.

Emma was the biological culmination of thirty years of Vance genetic research.

The car accident that killed Lily wasn't an assassination orchestrated by Hale to silence her.

It was an escape attempt.

She had tried to steal Emma and vanish because she had fallen into her own trap.

She had fallen in love with the life she built with me.

I fell to my knees, holding the journal against my chest as dry sobs wracked my body.

Every kiss she gave me before work.

Every anniversary dinner.

Every whispered promise in the dark while Emma slept down the hall.

Was any of it real?

Or had I been programmed to love a woman whose entire existence was a calculated lie?

Julian knelt beside me, resting his hand firmly on my shoulder.

"Look at me, Adrian," he ordered, his voice steady and resolute.

I forced my eyes up to meet his.

Looking at Julian was like looking into a distorted mirror of my own shattered soul.

"She may have started it as a science experiment," Julian said.

"She may have been born into that rotten, twisted dynasty."

"But she died running away from them with Emma."

"She crashed because she chose you over them."

"And what am I?" I cried, my voice breaking.

"If my memories were anchored, who was I before her?"

Julian went quiet for a moment.

The house seemed to hold its breath.

"You were the only man who volunteered to forget," Julian answered solemnly.

"Before the trial, you and I were brothers in the military division."

"When our unit was wiped out, you couldn't live with the survivor's guilt."

"You traded your past for a clean slate, Adrian."

"And Lily gave you a daughter to make you want to live again."

Before I could answer, the home security alarm began to chime softly.

A notification flashed on the wall monitor by the door:
