Chapter 6 - The Gathering Of The Faithful

The heavy door clicked shut behind Harrison and Sarah Vance, leaving a toxic silence hanging in the sterile air of Room 412.

Marcus turned his head away from me, his left hand gripping the hospital bed rail so hard his knuckles turned completely white.

"You see?" he whispered, his voice trembling with sheer, unadulterated defeat. "He has us trapped from every possible angle."

"He only has us trapped if we play by his rules, Marcus," I said, wiping the lingering tears from my cheeks with the back of my hand.

"There are no other rules, Clara! This is his hospital, his board, and his legal team! We don't have the strength to fight this!"

"You don't have the strength, Marcus, because you are sick and you’ve been carrying this monstrous burden entirely alone for four months."

I leaned over the bed, grabbed both sides of his face, and forced him to look directly into my eyes with unwavering intensity.

"You spent eleven years saving other people’s lives, Marcus Anthony Hayes. It’s my turn to fight for yours."

I turned on my heel, grabbed my purse from the armchair, and marched out into the fourth-floor corridor with absolute purpose.

David was waiting near the water cooler at the end of the hall, pacing back and forth with his hands shoved deep inside his pockets.

When he saw the look on my face, he immediately stepped forward, his eyes wide with nervous apprehension.

"What did Harrison say to you?" David asked quietly, glancing toward the security desk to ensure no one was monitoring us.

"He threatened to destroy Marcus’s entire legacy and strip our daughter’s future if we don't sign his cover-up agreement by five today."

David cursed under his breath, kicking the base of the wall with the rubber toe of his surgical clog.

"I knew he would pull this," David muttered, his jaw working violently. "He’s been setting this trap since October."

"Were you there, David?" I asked, pinning him with a cold, piercing glare that demanded total honesty. "Were you in the room during that surgery?"

David swallowed hard, looking down at the polished linoleum floor for several agonizing seconds before answering me.

"I was the first assisting surgeon on table four," David confessed, his voice barely audible above the hum of the air conditioning.

"Then you know the truth! Did Marcus cause that patient’s death, or was it the equipment like he told me?"

David looked up, his eyes shining with an unmistakable fire of guilt and righteous anger.

"Marcus was flawless that morning, Clara," David stated with complete, unshakeable conviction.

"His hand never shook once. The bypass machine malfunctioned during the transition phase, causing a fatal air embolism in seconds."

"Marcus fought for forty-five minutes straight trying to massage that man’s heart back to life with his bare hands."

"Then why haven't you spoken up, David? Why have you allowed Harrison to hang this murder around your best friend’s neck?"

"Because Harrison threatened my career too!" David cried, his voice breaking in a rare display of raw, unvarnished fear.

"He told me that if I contradicted the official report, he would ensure I never held surgical privileges in this state again!"

"I have three kids, Clara! I have a mortgage! I was a coward, okay? I was a terrified, spineless coward!"

A hand suddenly landed on David’s shoulder from behind, causing both of us to jump in surprise.

Nurse Evelyn stood there, still wearing her scrubs, her face set in grim, determined lines that brooked no argument.

"You weren't the only coward, Dr. Vance," Evelyn said quietly, looking from David directly to me.

"Evelyn?" I whispered.

"I was the circulating nurse on duty that morning," Evelyn revealed, her voice steady and resolute.

"And I kept the original paper maintenance log that Harrison’s risk management team ordered me to shred three weeks ago."

David stared at her in utter disbelief. "You kept the physical maintenance records?"

"I’ve worked with Dr. Hayes for twelve years," Evelyn said, her eyes flashing with defiance. "I wasn’t going to let that corporate butcher erase him."

"Where is that log right now, Evelyn?" I demanded, my heart racing with a sudden surge of wild, dangerous hope.

May you like

"It’s locked in my personal safe in the surgical supply room on the sub-basement level," she replied.

"Then let's go get it," I said, setting my jaw. "We have four hours before Harrison’s deadline, and I intend to spend every minute of it ruining his life."
