Chapter 15 - The Voice On The Tape

In the corner of the small viewing room sat an old cassette transcriber machine.

I slid the first tape into the tray and pressed the plastic play button.

The tape hissed with white noise, and then Marcus’s voice filled the tiny booth.

It was weaker than I remembered, raspy and choked with fatigue, recorded in the hollow acoustic of an empty operating room.

"If this tape is being reviewed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, my name is Dr. Marcus Hayes."

"Chief of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery at St. Jude Memorial."

"Three months ago, I discovered that the medication administered to my post-op patients had been systematically switched."

"Batch numbers were altered in the central pharmacy under the direct authorization of Vice President Thomas Vance and Chairman Arthur Sterling."

"When I ran my own independent spectrometry tests in the basement lab, I found lethal impurities."

"Four children have suffered fatal coronary arrests over the past six months."

"The hospital board covered each case by attributing the deaths to congenital anomalies."

"I confronted Sterling in his office on October fourteenth."

"He poured himself a glass of whiskey, looked me in the eye, and slid a folder across the desk."

"Inside was a complete fabrications dossier alleging that I had been siphoning fentanyl from surgical reserves since 2012."

"He promised me that if I spoke a single word to the press, my medical license would be stripped, I would spend twenty years in federal prison, and Eleanor and Lily would be left destitute with the shame of my ruined name."

"So I kept my head down."

"I stayed late every night, rewriting patient charts, manually swapping out tainted medication with clean supplies I purchased with my own private salary."

"That is where our savings went, Eleanor."

"Every dollar I told you I lost in bad market investments went to buying clean antibiotics and blockers for children whose parents had no idea their hospital was poisoning them."

Tears streamed uncontrollably down my cheeks, soaking my sweater collar.

Lily reached over and placed her small, warm palm over mine.

"Mommy," she whispered softly.

"Daddy was a superhero, wasn't he?"

"Yes, baby," I choked out, pressing her forehead against my lips.

"He was the bravest man who ever lived."

Then, Marcus’s voice on the tape grew lower, taking on a terrifying chill.

"Sterling knows I kept the physical evidence."

"Nurse Claire Vance from Ward 6 helped me smuggle the last pure batch out of the cleanroom."

"If I do not survive my current hospitalization, look at the bottom of the brown lunch bag, Eleanor."

"The micro-film negative is woven into the fiber base."

"Take it to Assistant US Attorney Miller."

May you like

"Do not go back to the house."

"They will burn it to the ground before they let you testify."
