Chapter 9 - The Fall of the Kingpin

The thermite charge attached to the helicopter’s tail rotor exploded in a blinding flash of orange fire.

The tail rotor shattered into hundreds of metallic fragments,

causing the aircraft to instantly lose stability in the high winds.

The helicopter spun violently out of control,

its main blades clipping the reinforced concrete edge of the rooftop communications tower.

Sparks showered across the rain-slicked roof as the aircraft crashed violently onto its side,

skidding across the wet helipad before coming to a halt against the heavy steel safety barrier.

Thick black smoke poured from the ruptured engine compartment,

mixing with the cold fog.

Gideon walked slowly across the roof,

his shoes stepping over broken glass and twisted aluminum debris.

He approached the ruined helicopter with his gun raised and steady.

Inside the crumpled cockpit,

the pilot lay unconscious against the shattered control panel.

Scrambling out of the broken passenger side door was Viktor Vance,

his expensive suit torn,

his face covered in soot and dripping blood.

The silver briefcase had burst open during the crash,

scattering thousands of bearer bonds and encrypted flash drives across the wet roof.

Viktor fell onto his hands and knees,

coughing violently as he tried to crawl away from the burning wreckage.

Gideon stood over him,

casting a long,

imposing shadow under the bright security floodlights of the helipad.

"Get up,"

Gideon commanded coldly.

Viktor turned over,

staring up at the man he had spent a year trying to destroy.

The arrogance that had defined Viktor for decades had vanished completely,

replaced by a raw,

pathetic terror.

"Gideon... wait..."

Viktor gasped,

holding up his blood-stained hands in a desperate plea for mercy.

"Listen to me... please!"

"I have fifty million dollars in off-shore Swiss accounts!"

Viktor babbled,

his voice cracking with panic.

"I can give you the passwords!

I can give you total control of the entire Midwest distribution network!"

"You can be richer and more powerful than any man in the history of this city!"

Gideon looked down at the pleading mob boss,

his expression unreadable,

his heart as hard as frozen granite.

"Money couldn't save my daughter,

Viktor,"

Gideon said softly,

the words sharp enough to cut through the freezing wind.

"And it certainly isn't going to save you."

Gideon raised his firearm,

pointing the barrel directly between Viktor’s eyes.

"Wait! Wait!"

Viktor shrieked,

tears streaming through the dirt on his cheeks.

"There’s something you don't know about Ren!"

Gideon’s finger paused on the trigger.

His eyes narrowed into dangerous,

lethal slits.

"Speak,"

Gideon whispered.

"The driver... the man who hit her..."

Viktor stuttered,

his breath coming in panicked gulps.

"He didn't act alone... he was hired by someone inside the waterfront commission!"

"Someone higher up than me!"

"Name him,"

Gideon demanded.

"If I tell you... you have to let me live!"

Viktor bargained desperately.

"Give me a pass to leave the country,

and I’ll give you the name of the man who ordered the hit!"

Gideon stared into Viktor’s trembling eyes for three long,

agonizing seconds.

Then,

a faint,

cold smile appeared on Gideon’s lips.

"I already know who he is,"

Gideon revealed softly.

"Clara’s father wrote his name on the very last page of the ledger."

"It was Senator Jonathan Croft."

Viktor’s face went completely pale,

his jaw dropping open in shock as he realized he had no bargaining chips left.

"You... you knew all along?"

Viktor whispered in disbelief.

"I needed you to lose everything first,"

Gideon said calmly.

"I needed you to watch your empire burn,

just as I had to watch my world shatter into pieces on that hospital floor."

Gideon cocked the hammer of his gun.

"This is for Ren."

A single gunshot echoed off the surrounding skyscrapers,

cutting through the howling wind of the Chicago night.

Viktor Vance slumped backward against the wet concrete,

his eyes staring blankly up at the dark,

rain-filled sky.

The reign of Chicago’s most ruthless kingpin had officially come to an end.

Lucas walked out onto the roof,

holding a tactical radio to his ear.

"Boss,"

Lucas reported quietly,

looking at Viktor’s lifeless body.

"Don Antonio and Madam Chen have secured all of Vance’s warehouses and shipping docks."

"His syndicate is completely dismantled."

Gideon lowered his weapon,

holstering it beneath his jacket.

He turned his back on the burning wreckage of the helicopter,

looking out over the shimmering lights of the city below.

"Call Elena,"

Gideon said,

his voice tired,

yet lighter than it had felt in a whole year.

"Tell her to prepare the estate."

"I'm coming home to the girls."
