Chapter 16 - The Echoes Across the Atlantic

The bitter winter chill had begun to soften over the city of Chicago,

yet the shadows lingering across the Atlantic Ocean grew darker with every passing hour.

Inside his private study at the Crosswell estate,

Gideon sat at his grand mahogany desk,

looking over the official adoption documents that would legally make Clara and Lily his daughters.

The white paper felt heavy in his scarred hands,

a sacred promise forged in the fires of grief,

tragedy,

and relentless survival.

Standing beside the glowing fireplace,

Elena Rostova tapped rapidly on her encrypted laptop,

her sharp eyes monitoring global security feeds.

"The federal grand jury in Washington has officially sealed Senator Croft's indictment,"

Elena reported softly,

her voice cutting through the quiet warmth of the room.

"Every asset tied to his domestic network has been frozen by federal marshals,"

she added,

turning the screen to show long lists of confiscated bank accounts.

"What about Europe?"

Gideon asked,

signing his name at the bottom of the final legal document with a heavy fountain pen.

Elena’s face darkened,

her fingers pausing over the keyboard.

"Lord Alexander Montgomery received news of Croft's arrest three hours ago in London,"

she said grimly.

"He didn't panic,"

"he didn't try to flee,"

"instead,

he activated the Vanguard Alpha."

Gideon looked up from his desk,

his dark eyes reflecting the flickering firelight.

"The Vanguard Alpha is Montgomery’s personal execution squad,"

Gideon noted,

his voice dropping into a register of cold,

calculated precision.

"Former international intelligence operatives who operate entirely outside sovereign law."

"They are led by Colonel Vance Sterling,"

Elena revealed,

pulling up a high-resolution dossier on the monitor.

"Vance Sterling is the older brother of Thomas Sterling,"

"the accountant whose notebook started this entire war."

"Vance believes you are responsible for his brother's death,"

Elena warned,

looking directly into Gideon's eyes.

"He isn't just coming to destroy the medical files,"

"he is coming to take revenge on everyone inside this house."

Down the hallway,

the joyful sound of little Lily laughing with Clara filled the air,

contrasting sharply with the looming threat of war.

Gideon stood up,

fastening his leather holster beneath his dark tailored jacket.

"Lucas,"

Gideon called into his comms unit,

stepping toward the door.

"Boss,"

Lucas replied instantly through the earpiece.

"Initiate Protocol Sunrise,"

Gideon commanded smoothly.

"We are moving the children to the island fortress at Iron Reef."

"If Montgomery wants a war on American soil,"

May you like

Gideon declared softly,

"I will give him an battleground where no innocent civilian will ever be caught in the crossfire."
