Chapter 16 - Fractured Trust

The aftermath of the Palmer House gala should have brought unity, but poison has a way of lingering in the darkest corners of an empire.

By three in the morning, Harrison had confessed to everything on digital tape, confirming that Luciano Moretti had orchestrated the entire Midwest uprising.

Yet as Matteo combed through Harrison's personal safe, he brought back an encrypted steel briefcase recovered from the senator's private suite.

We sat in the private study, the door bolted from the inside.

Carlo used a blowtorch to bypass the biometric lock, cracking open the steel casing to reveal several thick manila dossiers.

I pulled out the first file.

The heading read: *OPERATION BLUEBELL — FALCONE ASSET DISPOSAL.*

As I read the opening paragraph, my heart stopped beating.

The file contained private surveillance photos of me from six years ago—during the early days of our marriage.

Attached to the photos was a signed directive authorizing the transfer of all my late father's real estate properties directly into a Falcone holding company.

Below the authorization was a clause that made my blood run cold:

*In the event of civil unrest or syndicate conflict, Bianca Vance Falcone shall be isolated, declared legally incompetent due to psychological trauma, and placed in a secure private sanatorium outside the jurisdiction of Cook County.*

The date on the document was only four months before Carlo threw me out into the midnight rain.

I felt the air evacuate my lungs.

I dropped the file onto the desk, looking up at Carlo as if I were staring at a complete stranger.

"What is this?" my voice was a hoarse, ragged whisper.

Carlo looked down at the paper, his eyes widening in sheer shock as he read the words.

"Bianca... I never signed this," he said immediately, reaching out for me.

"Your signature is right there, Carlo!" I screamed, backing away from the desk, knocking over a crystal lamp that shattered violently against the hardwood floor.

"Look at the ink! Look at the seal!" my voice broke into uncontrollable sobs of fury and pain. "When you threw me out into that storm three days ago... were you trying to save me? Or were you following protocol to pack me away like an inconvenient pet?!"

Carlo stood frozen, the veins in his neck bulging as his breathing turned shallow and erratic.

"You think I could do that to you?" he roared, his voice shaking with an agony so profound that the walls seemed to vibrate.

"I took a bullet for you thirty-six hours ago, Bianca! I watched my own brother figure bleed out on the floor of my citadel to keep you alive!" Carlo slammed his fists onto the desk, splintering the heavy walnut wood.

"Then explain this document!" I demanded, pointing a trembling finger at the paper. "Explain why Senator Harrison had a signed order to commit me to an asylum under your name!"

Carlo stared at the signature, his chest heaving.

He walked over to the desk, pulled out a magnifying glass, and held the document up to the lamp light.

He ran his thumb across the embossed seal, his eyes narrowing into cold, murderous realization.

"Look closely at the crest," Carlo said, his voice dropping to a deadly whisper.

He held the paper out toward me, keeping his hands still so I could see.

"My family crest has five stars along the lower ribbon," Carlo explained, pointing with a steady finger. "This seal has four."

I blinked through my tears, looking through the lens.

There were indeed only four stars.

"Four stars belongs to my uncle, Roberto Falcone," Carlo said, his voice laced with venom. "He vanished to Miami eight years ago after my father took the leadership. Everyone thought he died of cancer."

"He didn't die," I whispered, the realization hitting me like a physical blow.

"No," Carlo confirmed, crushing the paper in his fist. "Harrison wasn't answering just to Moretti. My uncle has been orchestrating this from the shadows, using old Falcone protocols to fracture us from the inside."

The weight of the misunderstanding crashed down on me.

I had doubted him.

After everything we had survived—after the blood, the bullets, the sacrifice—a single piece of forged paper had almost torn down the sovereign union we had bled to build.

I stepped forward, my knees buckling beneath the sheer exhaustion of the night.

Carlo caught me before I could hit the floor, pulling me fiercely against his chest, wrapping his arms around me like an unbreakable shield.

"I'm sorry," I wept against his neck, breathing in the scent of his cologne, gunpowder, and cedar. "I'm so sorry, Carlo..."

"Hush," he whispered fiercely, burying his face in my hair, his arms trembling as he held me. "Don't ever apologize for being suspicious. In this life, paranoia keeps you breathing."

May you like

He pulled back slightly, his dark eyes burning into mine with an intensity that took my breath away.

"My uncle tried to turn you against me," Carlo swore, his thumb wiping away my tears. "Now, I am going to tear his world apart, piece by piece."
