Chapter 13 - Secrets of the Bloodline

The sun dipped beneath the horizon, casting long, bloody streaks across the glass facade of our estate.

While the soldiers secured the perimeter and patrolled the high stone walls, I retreated into the underground archives beneath the wine cellar.

The encrypted files I had retrieved from Santino's hidden drive contained more than just account numbers; they contained decades of archived correspondence between the old heads of the syndicate.

I sat at the wooden workstation, scrolling through digitized scans of handwritten letters from thirty years ago.

One folder was labeled with my maiden name: *Vance*.

My breath caught in my throat.

My family had never been part of the mafia—or so I had been told my entire life.

My father, Arthur Vance, had been a respected federal judge who died in a fiery car crash when I was just eighteen.

It was his death that had left me vulnerable, leading me into Carlo’s orbit years later when he stepped in as an enigmatic guardian angel.

With trembling fingers, I opened the oldest PDF in the folder.

It was a signed promissory note dated twelve years before my birth, bearing two signatures.

The first belonged to Salvatore Falcone—Carlo’s ruthless father.

The second, unmistakable in its elegant legal cursive, belonged to Arthur Vance.

My father had not been an incorruptible judge who fell victim to tragedy; he had been the Falcone family’s primary legal architect, shielding their blood-soaked empire behind federal rulings and closed-door dismissals.

Worse, the promissory note detailed a settlement: in exchange for millions routed into offshore trusts, Arthur Vance had pledged his future firstborn daughter to the Falcone bloodline to seal a permanent alliance of law and underworld.

"No," I whispered into the cold air of the archive, clutching my chest as the room seemed to spin.

All those years ago, when Carlo had courted me, when he had treated me like a sacred, untouched flower... was it ever real?

Or was I just a contractual debt waiting to be collected?

The heavy steel door of the cellar clicked open, and heavy footsteps echoed across the stone floor.

"Bianca?" Carlo’s voice was warm, filled with concern as he descended the steps. "You’ve been down here for three hours. You need to eat, sweetheart."

I didn't turn around. I couldn't bear to look at him yet.

"Did you know?" I asked, my voice barely audible, cracking beneath the crushing weight of betrayal.

Carlo paused in his tracks, sensing the sudden shift in the atmosphere. "Know what, Bianca?"

I spun the monitor around so the glaring light illuminated the screen.

Carlo walked closer, squinting at the document.

As his eyes registered the names and the seals, his face lost all color.

"Where did you find this?" he asked quietly, his posture freezing into rigid stone.

"Did you marry me to fulfill an underworld contract?" I demanded, tears finally burning the corners of my eyes. "Was my entire life—my love, my devotion, my grief for my father—just an assignment for you?"

"Look at me," Carlo commanded softly, taking two swift strides toward me.

"Don't touch me until you answer!" I snapped, backing away until my spine hit the damp brick wall.

Carlo stopped, raising both hands in a gesture of absolute surrender.

"I didn't know about the contract until two years after we were married," he said, his voice raw with an agony that mirrored my own.

"My father kept it hidden in his personal safe until his dying day," Carlo continued, his eyes desperate for me to believe him. "When he handed me that paper on his deathbed, he told me that you were mine by right of blood."

"And what did you do?" I choked out, a single tear escaping down my cheek.

"I burned the original copy right in front of his eyes," Carlo swore, taking a step closer, not stopping until his fingers gently cupped my wet cheek.

"I didn't want you because of an old man's corrupt promise, Bianca," he murmured, his voice trembling with a tenderness he never showed the world. "I fell in love with you the first moment I saw you in that university courtyard, wearing a blue coat and holding a stack of law books."

"I spent seven years keeping you out of this filth because I wanted you pure, untainted by what your father and mine had done," he whispered, pressing his forehead against mine. "If our marriage was built on a lie, it was their lie. Never mine."

I looked deep into his eyes, searching for the slightest trace of deceit.

There was none—only the fierce, desperate love of a man who would tear down heaven and earth before letting me doubt his heart.

I exhaled a shuddering breath, resting my trembling hands against his chest, feeling the wild, furious beat of his heart.

"If we are to survive what comes next," I whispered against his lips, "no more secrets, Carlo. Not a single one."

"I swear it on my soul," he promised, sealing the vow with a kiss that tasted of salt, iron, and unbreakable devotion.
