Chapter 2 - The Illusion Crumbles

The morning sun filtered through the floor-to-ceiling windows of my penthouse,

casting a golden glow over the sprawling city skyline below.

I stood there,

holding a steaming cup of black coffee,

watching the tiny cars navigate the busy streets.

I had not slept a single wink,

but I was not tired,

I was energized by pure,

unadulterated adrenaline.

Arthur sat at the massive oak dining table behind me,

his fingers flying across his laptop keyboard,

surrounded by stacks of financial documents,

deeds,

and corporate ledgers.

"The asset freeze is complete,

Madam,"

Arthur announced,

pushing his glasses up the bridge of his nose.

"Daniel's corporate accounts,

his personal checking,

the credit lines,

and Evelyn's platinum allowance card have all been suspended."

A slow,

wicked smile spread across my face.

"Tell me,

Arthur,

how exactly did we phrase the freeze to the banks?"

Arthur chuckled,

a rare sound from the stoic lawyer.

"Suspected corporate fraud and unauthorized diversion of parent company funds,

they won't be able to buy a cup of coffee until the investigation is over,

which,

of course,

we control."

At that exact moment,

miles away in the upscale shopping district,

Evelyn was strutting into her favorite designer boutique.

I could picture it perfectly in my mind,

because my private investigators had just sent me the live feed from a discreet camera across the street.

Evelyn was wearing her oversized sunglasses,

acting like royalty,

demanding the newest,

most exclusive handbag the store had to offer.

She strutted to the counter,

a $25,000 crocodile leather purse dangling from her manicured fingers.

She slammed her black card onto the glass counter,

expecting the usual fawning and compliments from the store manager.

The manager,

smiling politely,

swiped the card.

A red light beeped.

"I'm sorry,

Mrs. Sterling,"

the manager said,

frowning slightly,

"the card has been declined."

Evelyn's face must have turned bright red,

her arrogant facade cracking instantly.

"Declined?"

she screeched,

her voice echoing through the quiet,

luxurious store.

"That is impossible,

swipe it again,

you incompetent fool!"

The manager sighed,

swiping it a second time,

and then a third time.

"I am afraid it is still declining,

Ma'am,

perhaps you have another form of payment?"

Evelyn snatched the card back,

humiliated,

furious,

and confused,

storming out of the boutique empty-handed.

Meanwhile,

Daniel was sitting in his plush CEO chair at his company,

a company I had secretly bankrolled through a web of shell corporations.

He was leaning back,

probably gloating to his friends on the phone about how he had finally kicked his 'useless' wife to the curb.

Suddenly,

his office door flew open,

and his Chief Financial Officer,

a nervous,

sweaty man named Greg,

burst into the room.

"Daniel!"

Greg shouted,

waving a stack of papers frantically,

"we have a massive problem,

a catastrophe!"

Daniel scowled,

slamming his phone down.

"What is it,

Greg,

can't you see I'm busy?"

"The bank just called,"

Greg stammered,

his face pale,

"every single account is locked,

the payroll is frozen,

the credit lines are severed,

and our parent investor,

Obsidian Holdings,

has initiated a total withdrawal of all capital!"

Daniel shot out of his chair,

his heart pounding in his chest.

"Obsidian Holdings?"

he yelled,

spit flying from his lips,

"they can't do that,

they are our silent partners,

call the CEO immediately!"

Greg swallowed hard,

looking down at the floor.

"I tried,

Daniel,

but their legal team answered,

they said the CEO is preparing to evict you,

and that you should expect a visit very soon."

Daniel fell back into his chair,

May you like

his arrogant world slowly crumbling into dust,

having absolutely no idea that the CEO of Obsidian Holdings was the woman he had slapped yesterday.
