Chapter 14 - The Iron Fist

The news of Evelyn's highly public,

humiliating arrest reached my desk just after lunch,

delivered by Arthur in a neat,

concise verbal report.

I did not smile,

I did not laugh,

I simply nodded once,

acknowledging that the final,

loose end of the Sterling family's social presence had been neatly tied up and discarded.

"Moving on to business,

Madam,"

Arthur continued,

tapping the screen of his encrypted tablet,

"the hostile takeover of the remaining Sterling assets is complete,

the board of directors has been entirely replaced by our own loyal executives,

and the company has been officially rebranded under the Obsidian umbrella."

I stood up,

walking over to the massive wall of monitors displaying the intricate,

global web of my financial empire.

"What about the liquid capital we seized from Daniel's personal offshore accounts?"

I asked,

my eyes scanning the rapidly shifting data streams.

Arthur adjusted his glasses,

pulling up a secondary file.

"As requested,

the sum of forty-two million dollars has been completely isolated,

awaiting your specific instructions for allocation."

I turned to face him,

my mind already ten steps ahead,

planning the ultimate,

ironic legacy for the money that Daniel had stolen from me.

"Establish a new,

independent charitable foundation,"

I ordered smoothly,

my voice carrying the weight of absolute authority,

"dedicated entirely to providing legal,

financial,

and psychological support for victims of domestic abuse and financial manipulation."

Arthur's eyebrows raised slightly,

a rare display of emotion,

before a small,

respectful smile touched his lips.

"A brilliant,

poetic strategy,

Madam,"

he noted,

typing the command quickly into his device,

"it will completely destroy whatever tiny,

microscopic shred of sympathy the public might have had for Mr. Sterling,

while simultaneously cementing your public image as a benevolent,

powerful savior."

"Exactly,

Arthur,"

I murmured,

looking back out over the sprawling city,

"I want the name of the foundation to be heavily publicized,

make sure everyone knows exactly where the funding came from,

let Daniel's stolen millions serve the very people he thought he could crush so easily."

Before Arthur could respond,

the secure intercom on my desk chimed loudly,

and the nervous voice of my executive assistant,

Sarah,

filled the quiet office.

"Excuse me,

Madam CEO,"

Sarah stammered slightly,

clearly intimidated by the situation she was dealing with,

"security in the main lobby just called,

they have a situation at the front doors."

I frowned,

walking back to my heavy mahogany desk and pressing the intercom button.

"What kind of situation,

Sarah?"

I demanded sharply,

intolerant of any unnecessary disruptions to my highly structured schedule.

"It's...

it's your ex-husband,

ma'am,"

she replied,

her voice trembling,

"the guards say he is refusing to leave,

he is begging on his knees in the rain just outside the revolving doors,

he keeps screaming that he needs to speak to you,

just for five minutes."

Arthur immediately reached into his jacket,

his hand resting near his concealed weapon,

his eyes narrowing defensively.

"Shall I instruct security to use physical force,

Madam?"

Arthur asked coldly,

"we can have him arrested for trespassing and harassment within the next three minutes."

I stared at the intercom,

my mind racing rapidly,

processing the pathetic,

desperate image of the man who used to terrorize me now groveling like a beaten dog in the mud.

I could simply ignore him,

let the police drag him away to join his delusional mother in the dark,

forgotten corners of the justice system.

But a dark,

vengeful part of my soul,

the part that still remembered the burning sting of his hand across my cheek,

wanted one final,

absolute victory.

"No,

Arthur,"

I replied softly,

a dangerous,

chilling smile spreading slowly across my face,

"tell security to stand down,

I will handle this pathetic insect myself."

I buttoned my tailored jacket,

feeling the cool,

heavy weight of my power,

and began the long descent to the ground floor,

May you like

ready to deliver the final,

fatal blow to Daniel's shattered soul.
