Chapter 5 - The Ledger in the Floorboards

The armored black SUV sped through the tree-lined streets of Westchester, cutting through the morning mist like a dark shadow.
Three identical black sedans filled with Nico’s elite tactical enforcers followed closely in formation behind us.
Nico sat in the back with a heavy assault rifle resting across his knees, methodically checking the magazines.
His face was carved from absolute stone, cold, ruthless, and devoid of any mercy.
The sniper at the hospital had been eliminated by Dante's team, but the corrupt doctor had escaped through a basement service door.
Edmund Ashford knew that the assassination attempt on Marco had failed.
He knew that the Ferrara family was coming for his head.
"The Ashford estate sits on twenty acres of fenced land," I said, leaning over the blueprint map displayed on the tablet between us.
"My father has eight private security guards on the grounds during regular hours."
"After what happened last night, he will have doubled that number."
"They use an automated camera network with motion sensors along the primary iron driveway."
"If you drive through the front gates, you will face an open bottleneck."
Nico looked down at the map, studying the topography with the sharp eye of an experienced commander.
"Where is the blind spot?" Nico asked, his voice steady and calm.
"The old service gate near the abandoned horse stables on the eastern perimeter," I replied, pointing to a narrow gravel trail hidden by dense pine trees.
"The camera there has been broken for four years; my father never fixed it because he rarely uses that side of the property."
"From the stables, there is a stone path that leads directly to the cellar doors beneath the east wing."
"Those cellar stairs open into the service pantry, right next to his private study."
Nico nodded slowly, then reached over and picked up a lightweight Kevlar vest from the floor of the SUV.
"Put this on," he ordered gently, holding the vest out to me.
"I don't need—"
"Put it on, Nora," Nico insisted, his tone leaving no room for argument.
"I am not letting you walk into that house without armor."
I slipped the vest over my sweater, and Nico leaned forward to pull the Velcro straps tight across my ribs.
His knuckles brushed against my sides, causing a sharp intake of breath to catch in my throat.
He paused for a fraction of a second, his dark eyes meeting mine with an intensity that made the car feel small.
"No one hurts you today," Nico whispered, tightening the final strap.
"I give you my word as a Ferrara."
The SUV slowed to a crawl as we reached the dense tree line bordering the Ashford estate.
The driver killed the headlights, maneuvering the heavy vehicle onto the overgrown gravel path of the eastern gate.
The iron gates were padlocked, but two of Nico’s men hopped out with hydraulic bolt cutters and severed the chain in total silence.
The four vehicles slipped through the opening like ghosts, parking beneath the heavy shadows of the abandoned stables.
Nico stepped out of the vehicle, racking the bolt of his rifle with a crisp, lethal sound.
Twelve men emerged from the other cars, all dressed in black tactical gear with suppressed automatic weapons.
Dante approached Nico, giving a sharp hand signal toward the tree line.
"Thermal scopes show four guards patrolling the main courtyard, Boss," Dante whispered.
"Two more on the front terrace."
"The house is locked down tight."
"We stick to the girl's route," Nico ordered quietly.
"Non-lethal suppression if possible on the outer perimeter to avoid tripping the central alarm."
"Once we breach the study, lethal force is authorized for anyone who draws a weapon."
"Move out."
We moved through the dense pine trees in a silent, coordinated formation.
The damp smell of wet pine needles and rotting autumn leaves filled the cold air.
Every step I took closer to the house felt like walking backward into the nightmare of my childhood.
The towering brick mansion loomed through the gray mist, its high gothic windows dark and menacing.
We reached the weathered wooden cellar doors half-buried beneath ivy at the base of the east wing.
One of Nico’s men pulled out a set of heavy lock picks and knelt down before the rusted padlock.
Within thirty seconds, the mechanism clicked open.
Nico took point, raising his weapon as he pushed the wooden doors upward, revealing a dark stone staircase descending into the earth.
The air in the cellar smelled of damp stone, old wine barrels, and dust.
We moved swiftly through the cellar, ascending the wooden interior stairs that led into the dark pantry.
The door clicked open, and we emerged into the silent, luxurious hallway of the east wing.
The polished hardwood floors gleamed beneath the dim morning light filtering through the sheer curtains.
I knew this floor plan better than my own reflection; I had spent a decade pacing these exact boards in terror.
I stepped forward and pointed toward the heavy double doors carved with lions at the end of the hall.
"That's the study," I whispered, my heart slamming against my ribs like a battering ram.
Nico signaled for his men to flank the entrance, two on each side with rifles raised.
Nico kicked the center seam of the doors with brutal, concentrated force.
The ornate brass locks splintered instantly, and the doors flew open, crashing against the interior walls.
The enforcers flooded the room, clearing the corners with mechanical precision.
"Clear!" Dante barked from the left bookcase.
"Clear!" another guard echoed from the terrace window.
The room was completely empty.
The smell of expensive leather, Cuban tobacco, and cold fireplace ash hung heavy in the air.
In the center of the room sat the massive mahogany desk where my mother had taken her last breath.
I froze in the doorway, my breath hitching as the ghostly memories flooded my vision.
Nico walked over to me, placed his broad hand against the small of my back, and gently guided me inside.
"You're safe, Nora," Nico said, his voice anchoring me to the present moment.
"Where is it?"
I broke away from the trance of my memories and walked toward the tall eastern bay window.
The morning light fell across the dark oak floorboards, illuminating the subtle seams in the wood.
I counted four planks outward from the stone windowsill.
"Here," I whispered, dropping to my knees on the hardwood floor.
Nico signaled to Dante, who produced a thin steel pry bar from his tactical vest.
Dante wedged the tool beneath the seam of the fourth floorboard and applied steady pressure.
The old wood groaned, nails shrieking softly as the board lifted upward from the subfloor.
Beneath the plank lay a hollow cavity lined with weathered zinc metal to protect against moisture.
Inside the cavity sat a thick, leather-bound accounting ledger, wrapped tightly in oilcloth.
Beside it lay a sleek, military-grade encrypted black hard drive with federal markings.
"My mother’s ledger," I breathed, reaching down to lift the heavy book with trembling hands.
"And the digital backups of every wire transfer my father ever authorized."
Nico knelt beside me, his eyes gleaming with cold triumph as he picked up the encrypted hard drive.
"This is the end of Edmund Ashford," Nico said quietly, slipping the drive into his tactical pocket.
Before Dante could replace the floorboard, the sound of heavy footsteps thundered down the hallway outside.
"Freeze!" a voice screamed from the corridor.
Three private security guards appeared in the doorway, drawing semi-automatic shotguns.
" Ferrara!" the lead guard yelled, raising his barrel toward Nico's head.
May you like
Nico moved faster than humanly possible.
He grabbed my shoulder, shoving me down behind the heavy mahogany desk as gunfire erupted into the room.
