Chapter 7 - THE SWISS SHADOWS AND THE COLD WHISPER OF A STOLEN LEGACY

The private jet sliced through the clouds over the Alps,

a silver needle in a sea of white.

Inside the cabin,

the air was pressurized and silent,

save for the low hum of the engines.

Clara sat across from me,

staring out the window at the jagged peaks below.

She hadn't spoken since we left the mansion.

I watched her,

wondering what was going through the mind of a woman who was returning to her family’s stolen wealth.

"You're thinking about him,"

I said,

breaking the silence.

She didn't turn her head.

"I'm thinking about the day the bank account was opened,"

she replied.

"My father told me it was my 'fairytale fund'."

"He said if anything ever happened to him,

I was to take this key and go to Zurich."

"I was six years old."

She finally looked at me,

her expression unreadable.

"I didn't even know what a bank was."

"I just thought it was a place where they kept the magic."

I felt a pang of guilt,

sharp and jagged as the mountains below.

"My father didn't just take the money,

Clara."

"He took the magic too."

"I can't give that back."

"I know,"

she said,

her voice softening.

"But you're here."

"That’s more than I ever expected from a Hale."

When we landed in Zurich,

the air was crisp and bitingly cold.

The bank was a fortress of glass and steel,

located in the heart of the financial district.

We were escorted to a private room in the sub-basement,

far beneath the street level.

The vault door was a masterpiece of engineering,

a massive circle of polished chrome.

The bank official,

a man with white gloves and a face of stone,

bowed to us.

"The Moretti family vault,"

he announced,

his voice echoing in the sterile space.

"It hasn't been opened in twenty years."

He stepped back,

allowing Clara to approach.

Her hand hovered over the keyhole,

shaking.

I stepped up behind her,

placing my hand over hers,

guiding the key into the slot.

The lock turned with a series of heavy,

satisfying clicks.

The door swung open,

revealing a room filled with the ghosts of a dead dynasty.

There were stacks of gold bullion,

yes,

and piles of currency from a dozen different nations.

But that wasn't what caught my eye.

On a central pedestal sat a leather-bound ledger and a series of microfilms.

Clara walked toward them,

her breath hitching in her throat.

She picked up a small,

wooden box and opened it.

Inside was a set of pearls,

simple and elegant.

"My mother’s,"

she whispered,

clutching them to her chest.

I turned my attention to the ledger.

As I flipped through the pages,

my blood began to run cold.

This wasn't just a record of wealth.

It was a record of every transaction,

every bribe,

and every murder-for-hire ever ordered by the Commission.

It spanned decades.

It contained names that were currently sitting in the Senate,

on the Supreme Court,

and in the highest seats of the five families.

"This is it,"

I breathed,

the realization hitting me like a physical blow.

"This is why they killed your family."

"It wasn't about territory or pride."

"Your father was documenting everything."

"He was building a cage for all of them."

Clara looked up from her pearls,

her eyes wide.

"He was going to turn them in?"

"He was going to burn it all down,"

I said.

"And my father was the one they sent to stop him."

I looked at the ledger,

at the names and the dates.

This wasn't just money.

This was leverage.

This was a nuclear bomb in the palm of my hand.

"We have to get this out of here,"

I said,

my mind racing.

"If the Commission finds out we have this,

they won't just kill us."

"They'll erase us from history."

As if on cue,

the lights in the vault flickered and died.

The emergency red lights kicked in,

bathing the room in a bloody hue.

"Sir,"

Marcus’s voice crackled over my earpiece.

"We have a breach."

"The Swiss security has been compromised."

"They're coming down the elevator shaft."

I grabbed the ledger and shoved it into my coat.

I reached for Clara,

pulling her toward the back of the vault.

"Stay behind me!"

I yelled over the sudden sound of gunfire echoing from the hallway.

The hunt was no longer in the shadows.

May you like

The Commission had followed us to the heart of Europe.

And they were through playing games.
