Chapter 25 - THE FINAL ASCENSION INTO THE LIGHT BEYOND THE CRIMSON TIDE

We drifted for hours,

the mist acting as both our protector and our prison.

The sound of the helicopter faded,

replaced by the rhythmic,

soothing sound of the waves.

Clara was huddled in the center of the raft,

her eyes fixed on me.

"Is it over,

Bennett?"

she asked.

I looked at the small,

encrypted drive in my hand.

The cause of all this suffering.

The ghost of the Hale fortune.

"No,"

I said.

"It’s not over."

"As long as this exists,

they will never stop."

"They will hunt us to the ends of the earth."

"They will kill everyone who tries to help us."

I stood up,

balancing myself in the swaying raft.

I looked at the water,

the deep,

unfathomable blue that held the secrets of ten thousand years.

"What are you doing?"

Leo asked,

his eyes wide.

"I’m ending the story,"

I said.

I took the drive and held it over the edge of the raft.

"Twenty years of blood,"

I whispered.

"Ten years of my mother’s tears."

"A lifetime of Clara’s grief."

"It all ends here."

I let go.

The drive hit the water with a tiny,

insignificant splash.

I watched it sink,

the light catching it for a split second before it disappeared into the depths.

It was gone.

The keys to the kingdom.

The virtual throne.

The curse of the Hales.

I felt a weight lift from my chest,

a lightness that made me feel like I was floating.

"It’s gone,"

I said,

sitting back down.

"They can search for a hundred years."

"They can torture us,

they can kill us,

but they will never have it."

Clara reached out and took my hand.

She didn't say anything,

but her smile was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen.

It was a smile of pure,

unadulterated freedom.

The mist began to lift,

revealing the first light of a new dawn.

In the distance,

I saw a large,

white ship.

A research vessel,

according to the markings.

"They’ll find us,"

I said.

"And then what?"

Leo asked.

"Then,"

I said,

"we become whoever we want to be."

"No more Hales."

"No more Morettis."

"No more Vallis."

"Just people."

The ship grew closer,

its sirens sounding a greeting.

The drama of the Mafia boss and the maid had reached its final,

impossible conclusion.

We weren't the winners of a war.

We were the survivors of a tragedy.

And as we were lifted onto the deck of the ship,

the sun breaking through the clouds to bathe us in a warm,

forgiving light,

I realized that my mother had been right all along.

Money couldn't buy a soul.

But letting it go...

that was how you found one.

The silent archives were finally closed.

The blood was washed away by the sea.

And as I stood on the deck,

holding Clara in my arms,

I knew that the next chapter of our lives would be written in the light.

The end of the empire was the beginning of our humanity.

And for the first time,

I was ready to live.

The drama was over.

May you like

The peace had begun.

And the world was waiting.
