Chapter 23 - THE ORPHANS OF THE FIVE FAMILIES AND THE BLOODY VIGIL

Back in New York,

the vacuum left by the Hales and the Vallis was being filled by a new,

more chaotic element.

The "Orphans,"

as they were known,

were the sons and daughters of the lieutenants who had been arrested or killed in the leak.

They didn't have the codes of honor of the old world.

They didn't have the patience of the Commission.

They were fueled by social media,

cryptocurrency,

and a desperate need for the status they felt had been stolen from them.

In a windowless basement in Queens,

seven of them sat around a table made of reclaimed wood,

the air thick with the smoke of expensive cigars and the blue glow of laptop screens.

The leader was a man named Nico Moretti—a distant cousin of Clara’s,

though he had never met her.

He was a man who saw the Moretti name not as a legacy of tragedy,

but as a brand.

"He’s in Europe,"

Nico said,

pointing to a map on the screen.

"We tracked the tail number of the jet to Zurich,

then a private charter to Naples."

"After that,

the trail goes cold."

"But he’s not alone."

"He’s got the girl."

"And he’s got the Valli kid."

A woman sitting across from him,

her hands covered in intricate tattoos of serpents,

leaned forward.

"We don't need the kid,"

she said,

her voice a sharp,

unpleasant rasp.

"We just need the drive."

"If Hale really has the keys to the offshore accounts,

we could buy back the whole city."

"The cops,

the judges,

the ports."

"We could be bigger than the Commission ever was."

Nico nodded,

his eyes fixed on a photo of Bennett Hale.

"He’s old,"

Nico said.

"He’s tired."

"He thinks he’s found peace."

"But peace is just an invitation for someone else to take what you have."

"We’ve got a lead on a fisherman in Amalfi."

"A man who saw a black motorboat heading west toward the islands."

"We’re going."

"Not with an army."

"Just a surgical team."

"We find them,

we take the drive,

and we leave the bodies for the fish."

The drama of the new generation was one of pure,

unfiltered greed.

They didn't care about the sins of the past.

They didn't care about the hair-shaving of a dying woman or the grief of an orphan.

To them,

Bennett Hale was just an obstacle between them and a billion dollars.

The bloody vigil had begun.

In the shadows of the city that I had once ruled,

a new monster was being born.

A monster that didn't know the rules.

A monster that didn't care about the weight of a name.

And while I sat on a quiet porch on Agia Petra,

listening to the wind,

the wolves were already boarding their planes.

The hunt was no longer about revenge.

It was about the future.

And in the future,

the only thing that mattered was the one who held the data.

The drama was expanding,

stretching across the ocean like a cold,

invisible wire.

And soon,

the wire would snap.

I felt it in my bones.

The silence of the island was a lie.

The war hadn't ended.

May you like

It had just become global.

And I was the target in the center of the crosshairs.
