Chapter 2 - THE AUDIT OF BETRAYAL

Arthur Pendleton arrived in the subterranean war room less than fifteen minutes later, carrying a thick leather folio bound with red ribbon.

Behind him walked Mara Lin, my lead forensic accountant, whose eyes were sharp with dark satisfaction.

"We monitored Julian’s vehicle via private dispatch," Arthur reported, placing the dossier onto the mahogany surface.

"He arrived at the St.

Regis ballroom alongside Victoria Cross, Eleanor Vance, and Chloe Vance exactly seven minutes ago.

The society press is already photographing them under the title of Vance Enterprises’ golden couple."

I leaned forward, reviewing the luminous data cascading across the monitors before me.

"How deep does their financial rot extend, Mara?" I asked, my fingers resting on the polished desk.

Mara opened the red-ribboned folio, laying out a cascade of bank routing numbers and offshore wire transfers.

"Over the last nine months, Julian has systematically redirected forty-two million dollars from operational capital," Mara revealed.

"Every single outgoing wire was cleared under the guise of strategic consulting and public relations development.

The receiving entity is a shell company called Vance-Cross Holdings, incorporated in the Cayman Islands.

The sole listed beneficiary of that entity is not Julian Vance, but Victoria Cross under her maiden legal name."

I traced the signature line on the authorization forms, recognizing Julian’s handwriting instantly.

He had stolen from his own firm to enrich his mistress while lecturing me about thrift-store dresses and household chores.

"Julian assumed our silence meant ignorance," I observed, feeling no heartbreak, only absolute clarity.

"He believed he was playing chess while he was merely walking across a floor I paid to build."

Arthur pulled a secondary digital audio recorder from his inner jacket pocket and placed it beside the forensic report.

"This transcript was captured three weeks ago inside Julian's private executive suite," Arthur said gravely.

"Our surveillance team obtained it during the regulatory compliance sweep."

Arthur tapped the screen, and Julian’s voice resonated through the vaulted ceiling of the subterranean office.

"Clara never looks at the bank statements," Julian’s voice chuckled through the speaker, arrogant and dismissive.

"She was raised by working-class artisans and thinks a balanced budget means saving grocery coupons.

She trusts me blindly, Victoria, and she will sign whatever separation agreement I place in front of her."

Then Victoria’s voice came through, smooth and predatory.

"What happens if her family's old legal advisors suggest an audit before she signs the divorce papers?" Victoria questioned.

"I’ve already anticipated that," Julian responded with chilling detachment.

"My personal physician and two hired psychiatrists have drafted affidavits questioning her mental stability.

We will claim she suffered a prolonged nervous breakdown after her father’s death and cannot comprehend financial instruments.

We will seek full legal conservatorship over her marital shares, isolate her in a private care facility in upstate New York, and dissolve her rights.

With the right judges in our pocket, we will take full control of whatever assets she might inherit, leaving her with nothing."

The audio recording went quiet, the digital hum hanging heavy in the cool air of the underground room.

I listened to the man I had fed, sheltered, and defended plan my institutionalization without a flicker of remorse.

He had not merely fallen out of love with me; he had premeditated my total destruction to secure his mistress’s fortune.

"Ms.

Sterling," Arthur said, his eyes filled with professional fury.

"Every document for the asset freeze is drafted and signed.

The Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission have been briefed on Vance-Cross Holdings.

We hold ninety-two percent of Vance Enterprises’ secondary debt, and we control eighty percent of their commercial leases through Sterling holding firms.

With one word from you, Vance Enterprises ceases to exist as an operating corporation by midnight."

"Not by midnight, Arthur," I said, standing up and looking at the couture garment bag hanging near the changing salon.

"I want this finished publicly, in the very ballroom where he intends to celebrate my erasure.

Julian wants the approval of New York’s elite more than he values his own soul.

I will let him climb to the very peak of his vanity before I remove the floor beneath his feet."

I opened the garment bag, revealing a bespoke column dress of hand-woven obsidian silk embroidered with subtle silver thread.

It was designed by an atelier that did not advertise to the public, reserved exclusively for the heads of old-money trusts.

"Call the security detail at the St.

Regis," I instructed Arthur as I stepped toward the mirror.

"Tell them the principal shareholder of Sterling Investment Group is arriving without an escort.

And instruct the venue manager to relocate Julian’s table immediately."

"Where shall we place him, Ms.

Sterling?" Arthur asked with a knowing tilt of his head.

May you like

"Directly in front of the center stage," I answered with an unwavering smile.

"He deserves the best seat in the house to watch his empire fall."
