Chapter 19 - THE BURIED LEDGER

At two o’clock in the morning, I descended alone into the subterranean server vaults beneath the Sterling library.

The air in the room was chilled to forty-five degrees, humming with the low, monotonous drone of thousands of processors.

I inserted my master cryptographic key into the central terminal and typed the bypass password known only to my father and me.

The directory opened, displaying the complete encrypted financial history of Sterling Global.

I scrolled back exactly five years to the second week of October.

Three days before my father’s fatal crash on the Hudson highway.

A single encrypted transaction appeared on the screen, highlighted in deep red.

It was an offshore outbound wire transfer of five million dollars routed to a numbered account in Zurich.

The authorizing signature was not my father’s.

It had been authorized using an administrative executive override code.

I ran the digital forensic trace on the override code to reveal the originating terminal.

The screen blinked once, twice, and then displayed the physical location of the authorizing computer.

It had not originated from Julian Vance’s office.

It had not originated from Jonathan Cross.

The terminal was designated: *Legal Counsel & Estate Trustee — Station Alpha*.

Arthur’s private terminal.

My breath caught in my throat as the cold room seemed to spin around me.

Arthur had signed off on a multimillion-dollar payout to an untraceable account seventy-two hours before my father died.

And beneath the transfer log was an unexecuted shareholder proxy agreement.

An agreement that stipulated if Julian Vance were ever stripped of power, sixty percent of Sterling Global shares would automatically revert to an unnamed primary trustee.

A trustee whose identity was set to be revealed at the upcoming emergency board meeting at dawn.
