Chapter 16 - Fractures in the Armor

We left the Union Club in absolute silence, the heavy oak doors closing behind us like the lid of a tomb.

Inside the Maybach, the adrenaline that had carried me through the confrontation began to evaporate, leaving a hollow exhaustion in its wake.

I stared out the tinted window at the neon blur of Midtown, my hands trembling faintly in my lap.

Suddenly, warm, strong fingers wrapped around mine, anchoring me against the rising tide of memory.

"You dismantled an empire tonight, Alexandra," Matteo said softly in the dim interior of the limousine.

"I spent twenty-six years believing my father was a god," I whispered, leaning my head against the soft leather seat.

"To see him reduced to a stuttering coward in five minutes... it makes me wonder why I endured so much pain for so long."

"Because pain teaches us how to survive until we find the strength to conquer," Matteo said, raising my hand to press his lips against my knuckles.

The tenderness of his gesture brought a sudden, unexpected sting of tears to my eyes.

"You risked your entire network for me tonight," I said, looking into his fierce, dark eyes.

"If Arthur had called your bluff with the port authority, federal agents would be raiding your docks right now."

"I don't bluff, Alexandra," Matteo replied without an ounce of doubt.

"And there is nothing in my empire worth more than seeing you stand tall without fear."

He reached out, his thumb catching a single stray tear that had slipped down my cheek.

The intimacy between us felt electrifying, deeper and more terrifying than any threat Arthur could ever muster.

"Come home," he murmured, his voice husky and filled with quiet reverence.

"You are safe now, my brilliant queen."

The car pulled into the underground garage of the high-rise, the heavy steel security gates clanging shut behind us.

We took the private elevator directly up to the seventy-second floor, the city lights dropping away below us like scattered jewels.

When the elevator doors opened into the foyer, Marco was standing there, his face tight with alarming urgency.

"Boss," Marco said, keeping his voice strictly disciplined despite the obvious panic in his eyes.

"We have a breach on Kane Street."
