Chapter 13 - The Subpoena at Dawn

Before the sun could reach its zenith, the reality of high-stakes corporate warfare struck from an unexpected flank.
A sharp knock rattled the heavy double doors of the penthouse, accompanied by the distinct voice of building security.
Marco intercepted the visitor at the threshold, returning a moment later with a thick manila envelope stamped with federal seals.
"United States District Court for the Southern District of New York," Marco announced, holding out the document.
Matteo took the envelope without taking his eyes off his tablet, ripping open the seal with a pocket knife.
"Special Prosecutor Miller," Matteo read aloud, his tone dismissive yet calculating.
"They are demanding the immediate surrender of the holding ledgers for Apex Global Logistics."
"Apex is the shell corporation Julian used to wash the kickbacks from the harbor unions," I said immediately, rising to my feet.
"If they open Apex's records right now, your legitimate shipping operations will be frozen under federal injunction within forty-eight hours."
Matteo glanced at me, genuine appreciation flickering in his dark eyes.
"You see the chessboard before the pieces even touch the board," he noted.
"Because I spent three years hiding Julian's theft from the IRS so he wouldn't beat me to death in our kitchen," I replied evenly.
"Miller didn't issue this subpoena on a hunch," I continued, tapping the desk.
"Someone fed him the exact account routing numbers."
"Arthur," Matteo growled, crumpling the legal notice into a tight ball in his fist.
"Your father is using the Department of Justice as his personal attack dog."
"He wants to freeze your assets before the Union Club meeting tonight," I deduced, my mind racing through lines of code and tax treaties.
"If your accounts are frozen, the board members won't fear your financial retaliation."
"Then we have six hours to turn this subpoena into toilet paper," Matteo said, standing up to his full, imposing height.
"Alexandra, sit at the terminal."
"I will open the encrypted servers in Geneva; you find the paper trail that ties Miller directly to your father's campaign donors."
I pulled a chair up to the triple-monitor setup without hesitation, my fingers already hovering over the mechanical keyboard.
The terror that once paralyzed me was gone, replaced by the electric surge of absolute clarity.

Matteo leaned over my shoulder, the scent of cedar and clean linen enveloping me like an impenetrable fortress.
"Show them what happens when they challenge the woman who rebuilt my vault," he whispered in my ear.
