Chapter 9 - Confessions in the Dark

The small apartment felt suffocatingly hot as Lucas stood in the center of Hannah's cramped living room.

Matteo had finally cried himself to sleep on the pull-out sofa, wrapped securely in blankets with a cup of empty cocoa beside him.

Hannah stood by the kitchen counter, her arms crossed tightly over her chest, glaring at the dangerous man who had upended her life.

She demanded to know why he had sent her away with a check like she was a piece of trash, her voice trembling with indignation.

Lucas didn't look away; he walked slowly toward her, his heavy presence filling every inch of the modest room.

He confessed the dark truth about her father's death, laying bare the sins of the Ravalini family without making excuses.

He told her that the manila folder had revealed how his own father had ordered the cover-up of Arthur Cooper's audit.

He explained that he had pushed her away because keeping her close meant painting a permanent target on her back for his enemies.

Hannah listened in stunned silence, the bitter resentment in her heart dissolving into a profound, aching sorrow.

She realized that Lucas had carried the crushing burden of his family's sins alone in the shadows for a decade.

She reached out, her fingers gently brushing against the damp fabric of his ruined shirt near his collarbone.

Lucas closed his eyes at her touch, leaning into the warmth of her hand as if he were starving for human connection.

He whispered that he had tried to protect her by banishing her, but his son's desperate escape proved they were already bound together.

Before Hannah could process the intensity of his words, the glass window of her apartment shattered inward with a violent crash.

A smoke grenade rolled across the linoleum floor, hissing thick, blinding white fumes into the living room.
