Chapter 5 - The Ghost from the Past

Dawn broke over the Manhattan skyline, casting long, fractured shadows across the blood-stained floors of the Ravalini estate.
Cleaning crews moved silently through the halls while federal agencies were quietly bribed to look the other way.
Lucas sat in his private study behind a massive mahogany desk, staring at a thick manila folder marked with classified stamps.
Inside the folder were old newspaper clippings, birth certificates, and police reports detailing the murder of Hannah Cooper's father ten years ago.
Arthur Cooper had been a senior forensic accountant who uncovered money laundering trails leading directly to the Ravalini syndicate.
According to the official records, Arthur Cooper had died in a suspicious warehouse fire that was ruled an accidental electrical failure.
But the newly recovered financial logs told a much darker story.
Lucas traced his finger over a signature on the liquidation order bearing his own father's stamp.
The realization hit him like a physical blow to the chest.
His own family was directly responsible for the destruction of Hannah's family a decade ago.
Hannah walked into the study carrying a tray with a warm cup of black coffee, unaware of the explosive secret resting on the desk.
She set the cup down gently and noticed the haunted, pale expression carved across Lucas's face.
She asked him what was wrong, her voice filled with genuine concern that only made his guilt weigh heavier.
Lucas stood up abruptly, knocking his leather chair backward against the wall.
He looked at Hannah with a wall of emotional ice that he had carefully reconstructed overnight.
In a cold, detached voice, he told her that her time at the estate was officially over.
He pushed a check for one hundred thousand dollars across the mahogany desk and told her to pack her bags immediately.
Hannah froze, her heart shattering into a million jagged pieces as she stared at the check.
She asked him what she had done wrong, her voice cracking with suppressed tears.
Lucas turned his back to her, staring out the reinforced glass window toward the rainy skyline.
He lied through his teeth, telling her she was just a paid employee and he never wanted to see her face again.
Before Hannah could speak another word, Matteo burst into the study, screaming and begging his father not to send Hannah away.
Lucas clenched his fists so hard his knuckles turned ghostly white, fighting a war inside his own soul.
May you like
Hannah picked up the crying boy, kissed his forehead, and walked out of the study with her head held high and her soul utterly destroyed.
She thought she was leaving a monster, unaware that Lucas was watching her departure through the security monitors with tears in his eyes.
