Chapter 16 - The Midnight Intrusion

The words echoed in my skull during the entire drive back.
*Arthur wants Emily.*
Why would an eighty-two-year-old criminal mastermind living in hiding care about an eight-year-old girl he had never met?
I arrived at Saint Jude’s Academy just as the final bell rang.
Emily ran out of the brick building, her yellow backpack bouncing against her spine.
When she saw me standing by the gate, her face lit up with pure, untainted innocence.
"Daddy!"
She threw her arms around my neck.
I held her so tightly that she let out a tiny gasp.
"Daddy, you’re squeezing too hard," she giggled.
"I’m sorry, sweetheart," I whispered into her hair, fighting back the tears that burned my eyelids.
"We’re going on a trip."
"Today? What about Mom?"
"Mom is staying home for a little while," I said, buckling her into the back seat of my SUV.
We didn't go back to the estate.
I drove two hours north into the Catskill mountains, to a small timber cabin my father had purchased under a completely anonymous corporate alias in 1989.
It had no internet.
It had no digital utilities.
It was heated by a cast-iron woodstove and powered by a buried diesel generator.
Marcus and two of his most trusted men followed us in an unmarked truck.
By midnight, Emily was asleep on the upstairs cot, bundled beneath three thick wool blankets.
Downstairs, I sat at the wooden table with the cassette tape and a battery-powered tape recorder Albright had given me from the bank.
I pressed play.
The tape hissed with vintage static.
Then, my father’s voice came through the small speaker—cracked, tired, and heavy with regret.
"David," my father began.
"If you are listening to this, Arthur Sterling has come out of the shadows."
"I made a bargain with the devil twenty-four years ago to build the life you now enjoy."
"I thought I could outsmart him. I thought I could protect you."
"Arthur had two daughters. Evelyn, who inherited his madness. And Claire, who inherited his cowardice."
"When Arthur faked his death, he needed a bloodline to hold his assets in trust—assets that the federal government could never seize."
"The Blackwood Trust is legally structured so that only a direct biological descendant of Arthur Sterling can claim the principal balance upon his death."
"Claire was disqualified because of an old criminal indictment she signed as a minor."
"Evelyn was disqualified because of her institutional commitment."
The tape paused with a sharp click of a cigarette lighter.
My father took a slow breath before continuing.
"Arthur’s entire seventy-million-dollar fortune has only one legal heir, David."
"Emily."
"Arthur doesn't want to kill her."
"He wants to adopt her, take custody, and use her name to clean eighty million dollars in stolen cartel assets."
May you like
"And Claire agreed to the adoption papers the night before Emily was born."
