Chapter 15 - The Man in the Cell

The police sirens broke the standoff.

Marcus had followed protocol.

When the black sedans blocked the driveway, he hadn't just watched Emily—he had called the regional tactical unit.

Three squad cars roared through the open gates, gravel flying in great arcs.

Evelyn didn't run.

She didn't reach for a weapon.

She simply adjusted her coat, turned back toward her vehicle, and stepped inside.

"This is a civil eviction dispute, officers," Evelyn said through the cracked window as the squad cars surrounded her.

"We have the court order. We will return tomorrow with the sheriff."

The sedans slowly backed down the driveway under the watchful eyes of four armed deputies.

Claire remained on her knees in the dirt, sobbing into her open hands.

I didn't look at her.

I didn't offer a hand.

I walked into the house, grabbed my keys, and walked out the back door without saying a single word.

An hour later, I was sitting across a stainless steel table in the maximum-security wing of the county detention facility.

Victor was brought in wearing an orange jumpsuit, his wrists chained to a belt around his waist.

His face was pale, his arrogant smirk replaced by hollow, frightened eyes.

"You shouldn't be here, David," Victor muttered, looking at the two guards by the door.

"Evelyn is at my house," I said.

Victor closed his eyes and let out a long, shuddering breath.

"Then you’re already dead."

"Tell me the truth, Victor. Tell me about Arthur Sterling."

Victor looked up, his jaw trembling.

"Arthur never died in the Alps, David. That was the setup. Arthur faked the crash to escape an indictment from the Department of Justice back in ninety-four."

"Where is he?"

"He’s in a compound outside Montreal," Victor whispered.

"He’s eighty-two years old, hooked up to dialysis, but his mind is sharper than a razor."

"He controls six holding companies through Evelyn."

"And what about Claire?" I pressed, leaning over the table.

"Was Claire working with you from the start?"

Victor shook his head slowly.

"Claire thought she was playing both sides. She was terrified of Evelyn. She wanted to pay off Michael so Arthur would leave her family alone."

"Michael double-crossed her. Michael wanted the entire seventy-million-dollar trust for himself. He figured if Emily died, the trust would revert automatically to Claire, and Michael had the leverage to blackmail Claire into signing it over to his shell firm."

"So Claire didn't plan Emily’s death?"

"No," Victor said, his voice dropping to a whisper.

"Claire was just a coward. A weak, pathetic coward who thought she could bargain with wolves."

"Then why did Evelyn show up today?" I asked.

Victor leaned forward, the chains clinking against the steel.

"Because Arthur found out what happened to Emily."

"And Arthur doesn't want the money, David."

"Arthur wants Emily."
