Chapter 19 - Sins of the Father

The revelation hung in the damp, salt-choked air of the cargo hold like a detonated flashbang.

Arthur hadn't just abandoned my mother and me twenty-six years ago.

He had built a second, shadow family in Europe under Eleanor's tyrannical thumb, repeating the exact same cycle of cowardice, deceit, and subjugation.

"Step away from the console, Victoria," I commanded, my voice firm but devoid of malice.

"I can't!" Victoria cried, her hands hovering inches from the terminal's red manual override lever.

"She has an automated biometric monitor wired to her heart!"

"If her pulse stops, or if this console goes offline without her personal encryption code, the launch protocol triggers automatically!"

"We have twelve minutes before Norfolk is reduced to ash!"

The lead SEAL master chief looked at me through his tactical visor.

"General, we don't have the codes to override a dead man's launch sequence."

"We need to scuttle the vessel right here and evacuate by air."

"If we scuttle the vessel, the warheads will detonate when the seawater breaches the lithium battery banks," I said, stepping past him directly to the terminal.

"Katherine, don't!" Victoria pleaded, backing away against the steel bulkhead.

"Eleanor said you were a heartless soldier who would sacrifice anyone to protect your reputation!"

"Eleanor lied to you, little sister," I said softly, my eyes locking onto the cascading lines of launch code.

I pulled my mother’s journal from my tactical rig.

On the very last page, beneath the faded ink of her final thoughts, Evelyn had drawn a single musical staff with five handwritten notes:

*E - B - G - D - A.*

The opening chord of the lullaby she used to hum to me when we were shivering through the winter nights in our unheated room.

"What is that?" Victoria asked, her breath catching in her throat.

"Arthur’s mother thought my mother was weak because she loved music, art, and truth," I whispered, my fingers dancing across the terminal’s alphanumeric input.

"Eleanor thought the master kill-switch to her entire criminal empire was locked behind military cryptography."

"She never understood that my mother was the one who designed the system architecture from the very beginning."

"Evelyn didn't use an algorithm."

"She used her favorite song."

I punched in the final note sequence: *05 - 02 - 07 - 04 - 01.*

The massive hydraulic bay doors groaned.

The countdown display froze at *03:14*.

Then, with a deafening metallic sigh, the launch canisters powered down, their internal guidance gyroscopes whining to a complete, dead halt.

The red emergency lights across the ship transitioned into a tranquil, steady green.

*SYSTEM OVERRIDE COMPLETE.*

*PAYLOAD DISARMED.*

Victoria sank to the steel floor, covering her face as great, racking sobs tore through her body.

I walked over to her, knelt down on one knee, and placed my combat glove gently upon her trembling shoulder.

"The war is over, Victoria," I said quietly.

"You don't ever have to be afraid of House Mercer again."

"You don't understand, Katherine," Victoria choked out, looking up at me with eyes full of absolute, unspeakable dread.

"Eleanor isn't on an offshore yacht."

"She isn't fleeing to Switzerland."

"Where is she, Victoria?" I asked, my grip tightening on her arm.

"She went to the only place she knew you couldn't shoot her," Victoria whispered, her teeth chattering with terror.

"She is inside Arlington National Cemetery."

"At your mother’s grave."
