Chapter 16 - The Infiltration

Eleanor did not flinch when the ink splattered her pristine lace cuff.
She merely placed her silver cutlery onto her plate with a measured, metallic clink.
"A shame," she whispered, rising from the table with the regal posture of a monarch delivering a death sentence.
"Your mother made the exact same speech thirty minutes before I had her evicted into the snow."
"Enjoy your stars while they remain pinned to your chest, General."
"The ground beneath your feet is hollow."
She walked out of the suite, surrounded by her security detail, disappearing into the subterranean corridors of the hotel before local authorities could serve an arrest warrant.
Her diplomatic immunity, granted under a fraudulent trade delegation charter, gave her twenty-four hours of safe harbor on American soil.
Twenty-four hours to vanish forever into the non-extradition sanctuary of an offshore sovereign enclave.
I returned to the Pentagon at 0200 hours.
The hallways were dim, patrolled by elite military police who snapped crisp salutes as I marched toward the secure intelligence wing.
I entered the SCIF—the Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility—where General Vance was waiting with our elite cyber-counterintelligence unit.
"She’s moving her liquid assets out of Switzerland right now," Vance reported, his eyes red from staring at multi-layered network diagrams.
"Over fourteen billion dollars is moving through shell banks in the Cayman Islands, the Channel Islands, and Singapore."
"If those funds clear the international clearinghouse at 0600, Eleanor vanishes into the wind with enough capital to finance an army of private military contractors."
"We can't freeze diplomatic accounts without a signed order from the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court," Agent Cole interjected, leaning over Vance’s console.
"And we don't have the primary decryption keys for Bank of Helvetica’s server nodes."
"Yes, we do," I said, pulling my mother’s water-stained journal from my leather tactical case.
I flipped to the back cover, where Evelyn had pressed a series of seemingly random numerical coordinates into the binding with a sewing needle.
"My mother wasn't just an auditor," I said, pointing to the sequence.
"She was a cryptanalyst for the Office of Naval Intelligence before she met Arthur."
"These aren't bank account numbers."
"These are the master administrative override protocols for the automated trading algorithms House Mercer installed in Zurich thirty years ago."
The cyber-warfare specialist seated at the terminal blinked in disbelief.
"General, if we feed these keys into the Department of the Treasury's defensive mainframe, we won't just freeze Eleanor's accounts."
"We will initiate an automated hostile seizure of every Mercer asset worldwide."
"Do it," I ordered without hesitation.
The specialist’s fingers flew across the keyboard.
Lines of green diagnostic code cascaded across the tactical displays, intersecting with the global financial matrix.
On the central projector, a progress bar climbed steadily: 40%... 65%... 88%...
Suddenly, the red emergency klaxons inside the SCIF shrieked.
The fluorescent ceiling lights violently cut out, plunging the underground bunker into pitch-black darkness before the amber emergency backups flickered on.
"Power failure across the entire eastern quadrant of the Pentagon!" a technician yelled, grappling with his frozen screen.
"We have a catastrophic data breach in our local terminal!"
"Firewall integrity compromised!"
Across every monitor in the room, the Treasury interface dissolved into a stark, pulsating crimson screen.
A single graphic appeared:
The black falcon holding a broken sword.
Beneath it, a message flashed in real-time:
*You should have taken the pen, granddaughter.*
*The vault is already open.*
May you like
*And the first asset has been deployed.*
