Chapter 14 - The Interrogation of Shadows

The concrete walls of the federal detention facility beneath the metropolitan courthouse were painted a sterile,
nauseating shade of institutional gray.
Fluorescent tubes hummed behind wire-mesh cages on the ceiling,
casting harsh,
unflattering light over the scarred stainless-steel table in Interrogation Room B.
Across the table sat Daniel Brooks,
stripped of his tailored tuxedo,
dressed in an ill-fitting orange jumpsuit that emphasized how small,
sunken,
and hollow he had become in less than twelve hours.
His hands were shackled to a welded steel ring in the center of the table,
the metal links clinking whenever his involuntary tremors seized him.
Assistant U.S.
Attorney Marcus Thorne sat across from him,
flanked by Detective Vance from the state police financial crimes unit.
A thick stack of forensic accounting documents and color photographs of the Grand Sovereign Gala lay between them.
"Let’s review the bidding,
Daniel,"
Thorne began,
his voice as dry and sharp as sandpaper.
"The grand jury has already returned an eight-count indictment for wire fraud,
conspiracy to commit bank fraud,
and interstate money laundering.
Your Cayman accounts under E&D Holdings have been seized under federal civil asset forfeiture laws.
Every cent of the three million two hundred thousand dollars you laundered has been traced directly to your IP address at your residence."
Daniel rubbed his bloodshot eyes with his cuffed fingers,
his chest heaving with ragged,
shallow breaths.
"I want a deal,"
Daniel choked out,
his voice hoarse.
"I want to cooperate.
I can give you everything on Emily.
She was the mastermind behind the pharmaceutical tampering.
I’m a financial analyst,
not a chemist!
I had no idea what was actually in those amber bottles!"
Detective Vance leaned forward,
letting out a mocking,
disbelieving snort.
"Is that why you placed two capsules next to your wife’s breakfast plate every morning for eighteen hundred consecutive days,
Daniel?
Is that why your encrypted server contained spreadsheets titled 'Phase 1:
Suppression of fertility via compounded progestin therapy'?"
"Emily told me it was an experimental balancing agent!"
Daniel pleaded,
his voice rising in panic.
"She said Olivia was too fragile to handle conventional IVF,
that this would help stabilize her hormones until she was mentally fit to be a mother!
Emily hated her sister!
She was obsessed with Olivia’s inheritance!
She told me if we didn't take control of the Brooks Trust,
Olivia would squander it on fraudulent holistic clinics!"
"Save it,
Brooks,"
Thorne interrupted coldly,
opening a second folder containing a freshly transcribed document.
"Because down the hall in Interrogation Room D,
Emily Brooks has been talking for the last three hours without stopping."
Daniel’s head snapped up,
terror flaring in his eyes.
"What did she say?"
"She handed over three years of encrypted text messages from your burner phone,"
Thorne said,
tapping the transcript.
"Including the message from six months ago where you told her,
quote:
'Make sure the concentration is high enough to keep her lining completely flat.
If she gets pregnant now,
the trust codicil locks me out forever.'
Unquote."
Daniel’s face collapsed into an expression of sheer,
unadulterated despair.
The very woman he had planned to escape with had driven a steel stake through his legal defense before the sun had even risen.
Meanwhile,
two hundred feet away in Interrogation Room D,
Emily was learning that loyalty among thieves was a fiction.
Her face was streaked with running mascara,
her expensive chignon reduced to a chaotic birds’ nest,
her hands trembling violently as she clutched a paper cup of lukewarm water.
"Daniel promised me everything!"
she screamed at her court-appointed public defender and the two state homicide investigators sitting across from her.
"He told me he would marry me in Switzerland!
He said Olivia never appreciated him,
that she was an empty shell who only cared about her dead father’s legacy!
I only compounded those supplements because Daniel threatened to expose my previous clinical diversion irregularities if I didn't help him!"
Investigator Miller shook her head with cold pity.
"That’s a very touching defense,
Emily,
except for one small problem.
We executed a search warrant on your personal safe deposit box at the downtown branch this morning.
Inside,
we found your signed partnership agreement for E&D Holdings,
stipulating a fifty-fifty split of all laundered proceeds from the Brooks Trust.
We also found your handwritten notes detailing the lethal doses of chlormadinone required to induce fetal ischemia."
Emily froze,
her breath catching in her throat,
the paper cup slipping from her fingers and splashing water across her denim prison pants.
"You didn't do this under duress,
Emily,"
Miller said,
her voice dropping into an icy,
condemning whisper.
"You did this because you hated your sister for being born first,
for being our father’s favorite,
and for inheriting the empire you believed you deserved.
You were willing to chemically slaughter your own niece or nephew for four million dollars and a penthouse in Zurich."
"I didn't know she was pregnant!"
Emily shrieked,
clawing at her face.
"I didn't know!
The supplements were meant to prevent it,
not kill it!"
"You gave her a fresh batch forty-eight hours ago,"
Miller countered,
dropping Dr.
Vance’s toxicological timeline onto the table.
"Marcus Vance’s forensic analysis confirms that the dosage in that specific bottle was doubled.
Doubled,
Emily.
You knew she had missed two days at the conference.
You suspected her system might have rebounded,
and you delivered a fatal dose designed to ensure no embryo could survive the weekend.
Under state statute,
that is attempted murder of an unborn child.
Your bail has been set at ten million dollars,
cash only.
You are never walking out of these walls as a free woman."
Emily buried her face in her shackled hands,
howling in animal grief,
May you like
the crushing realization of her total,
permanent destruction finally closing around her throat like an iron band.
