Chapter 13 - The Iron Descent

Before the final echo of my unborn child’s heartbeat had even faded from the speakers,
the massive mahogany double doors of the grand ballroom burst inward with a resounding,
metallic crash.
"Federal agents!
Nobody move!"
a thunderous command rang out,
shattering the paralyzed silence of high society.
Six United States Marshals in tactical vests,
accompanied by eight uniformed state troopers and four armed investigators from the Attorney General’s special crimes division,
flooded into the ballroom,
their heavy boots thudding in synchronized rhythm across the polished wood.
The guests scrambled back,
clearing a wide,
terrified perimeter around Table One as if the area had become a blast zone.
Daniel’s survival instincts took over in a wave of blind,
feral panic.
He spun on his polished patent leather shoes,
abandoned Emily without a backward glance,
and bolted toward the emergency service exit behind the catering pantry.
"Daniel Brooks,
halt!"
an officer bellowed.
Daniel crashed through the swinging stainless-steel service doors,
sending a cart of crystal dessert flutes crashing to the floor in a shower of splintering glass.
He sprinted down the narrow tile corridor,
desperately searching for the freight elevator that led to the underground parking garage.
He slammed into the heavy crash bar of the exterior fire exit,
bursting out into the damp,
freezing air of the hotel’s rear loading dock.
He took two frantic steps into the alley before his path was abruptly,
violently blocked.
Julian Cole stepped out from behind a concrete support pillar,
his face expressionless,
holding a heavy-duty stun baton in his right hand.
Daniel lunged forward like a cornered animal,
raising his fists in a pathetic attempt to force his way past.
Cole didn't flinch;
with the fluid,
practiced economy of a career federal agent,
he sidestepped Daniel’s clumsy swing,
swept Daniel’s right leg out from beneath him,
and drove him face-first into the cold,
wet asphalt.
Daniel let out a pathetic,
choked wheeze as Cole buried a steel-toed boot between his shoulder blades,
twisting his right arm up behind his back until the joint popped with sickening finality.
"Brooks-Vanguard Capital doesn't look so untouchable down here in the garbage,
does it,
Daniel?"
Cole murmured in a low,
frosty voice.
Two uniformed state troopers rushed through the door,
driving their knees into Daniel’s spine,
pinning his face against the grimy oil-stained concrete.
Click.
Snap.
The heavy steel handcuffs bit deep into Daniel’s wrists,
ratcheting tight until his circulation turned his fingers blue.
Back inside the grand ballroom,
the scene was even more devastating.
Emily had backed herself against the marble wall,
clutching her torn crimson gown,
her face contorted in an ugly,
spitting snarl as Assistant U.S.
Attorney Marcus Thorne and two female state investigators closed in on her.
"Get away from me!"
she shrieked,
her voice reaching a shrill,
glass-shattering pitch that horrified her former hospital colleagues.
"You have no jurisdiction here!
I am a healthcare professional!
This is a medical disagreement orchestrated by an emotionally unstable patient!
Olivia fabricated those files!
She’s jealous because Daniel never loved her!"
"Emily Brooks,"
Investigator Sarah Miller said calmly,
stepping inside Emily’s reach,
grabbing her slender wrists with iron authority,
and spinning her around to face the cold marble.
"You are under arrest pursuant to a federal warrant for grand larceny,
interstate wire fraud,
and conspiracy to commit money laundering."
"And pursuant to a state warrant,"
Assistant U.S.
Attorney Thorne added,
stepping forward with the black legal folder,
his voice carrying across the entire room,
"for aggravated poisoning with intent to induce chemical abortion,
reckless endangerment,
and unlicensed compounding of controlled pharmaceutical substances."
"No!
No!
Daniel!"
Emily screamed,
thrashing wildly as the cold steel bracelets snapped around her wrists.
"Daniel,
tell them!
Tell them it was all you!
Tell them you made me do it!"
Uniformed officers dragged Daniel back into the grand ballroom through the service entrance,
his tuxedo jacket torn,
his white shirt streaked with grease and blood from his scraped forehead,
his expensive hair matted to his skin.
The entire high-society assembly watched in stunned,
scornful silence as the golden boy of the financial district was paraded in chains past the very men and women whose fortunes he had coveted.
As the officers pushed Daniel toward the center aisle,
he looked up and saw me standing at the top of the stage steps,
untouched,
unyielding,
and magnificent in midnight-blue velvet.
"Olivia!"
he gasped,
falling to his knees on the burgundy carpet,
his voice breaking into pathetic,
sobbing pleas.
"Livvy,
please!
Listen to me!
It was Emily!
She manipulated me from the beginning!
She told me you couldn't handle the truth!
She wanted the money,
Liv!
I loved you!
I still love you!
Think of our marriage!
Think of everything we built together!"
Emily twisted in her handcuffs,
her face turning purple with feral fury.
"You spineless coward!"
she screamed at Daniel,
spittle flying from her lips.
"You begged me to get those pills!
You said you couldn't stand the sight of her crying anymore!
You said once we had her eight million,
we would leave her to rot in an institution!
You came up with the Cayman account,
you disgusting parasite!"
The two lovers,
who forty-eight hours ago had laughed about my future like gods arranging a puppet show,
were now tearing each other apart like rabid dogs in front of five hundred witnesses.
I walked down the stage steps slowly,
my heels clicking with steady,
rhythmic authority against the wood.
I stopped five feet away from where Daniel knelt in the dirt of his own making.
The ballroom was so quiet that the faint hum of the air conditioning sounded like a gale.
"You told Emily that after I left,
the two of you would stop hiding,"
I said,
my voice quiet,
steady,
and devastating in its absolute lack of pity.
"You were right,
Daniel.
Tonight,
you and Emily stop hiding forever.
Tonight,
the whole world sees you for the monsters you are."
I turned my back on them without waiting for an answer.
"Take them away,"
Arthur Sterling commanded from the foot of the stage.
The officers hauled Daniel to his feet by his collar,
marched Emily out through the center aisle,
May you like
and dragged them out into the flashing red and blue lights of the waiting police cruisers,
leaving their shattered ambitions behind in the wreckage of the Brooks family ballroom.
