Chapter 7 - Whispering Keys and Shadows

The historic Royal Opera House stood magnificent beneath the dark night sky,
its towering marble pillars glowing faintly under the bright city streetlights.
For thirty long years,
this grand theater had remained partially closed,
plagued by rumors of ancient curses,
unsolved arson,
and phantom melodies echoing through the abandoned balconies.
Tonight,
the heavy iron gates were wide open,
guarded by dozens of heavily armed men in dark suits.
A fleet of armored luxury sedans lined the private driveway,
belonging to the high leaders of the Sovereign Circle.
Cassian stepped out of our black limousine,
extending his gloved hand toward me.
I stepped into the crisp night air,
draped in a breathtaking floor-length dark emerald gown that shimmered under the golden lanterns.
A silver mask encrusted with black diamonds covered the upper half of my face,
matching the dark,
mysterious atmosphere of the masquerade meeting.
As we walked through the grand gilded foyer,
the quiet whispers of powerful men and elegant women died down instantly.
The high members of the Sovereign Circle stood gathered around the central orchestra pit.
At the center of the group stood Lord Sterling,
the elderly,
ruthless leader of the Circle,
who leaned heavily on a silver-headed cane carved in the shape of a cobra.
"Cassian Voss,"
Lord Sterling said,
his voice rasping like dry leaves scraping across concrete.
"You bring the maid into our sacred hall?"
"She is no maid,
Sterling,"
Cassian replied calmly,
his voice echoing off the high domed ceiling with absolute dominance.
"She is Elena Marlow,"
the sole owner of this Opera House,
the heir to Samuel Weiss,
and my future wife.
"You speak boldly for a young kingpin,"
another member,
a notorious cartel boss named Victor Moretti,
snarled from the shadows.
"Ashcroft was our brother."
"His political power protected our shipping routes,"
and you destroyed him in a single night for a worthless piece of old paper!
I took a slow,
confident step forward,
the sound of my high heels clicking loudly against the polished marble floor.
"That 'worthless piece of paper',"
I said,
my voice ringing out clear and resonant,
"contains the exact offshore bank account numbers,"
smuggling manifests,
and bribery records of every single person standing in this room.
"My father didn't just record musical notes in that manuscript,"
he recorded the secret financial ledger that Samuel Weiss constructed before his death.
The entire hall went dead silent.
Lord Sterling's hands tightened around his silver cane,
his eyes narrowing into thin,
lethal slits behind his golden mask.
"You lie,"
Sterling growled.
"Samuel Weiss was a composer,"
not an accountant!
"He was a genius,"
I corrected,
my eyes flashing with intense pride.
"He built a complex acoustic cipher into his music."
"A code that can only be read when played correctly on the master piano sitting in the subterranean pit below us."
Moretti drew a concealed pistol from his coat,
pointing it directly at my forehead.
"Then you will sit at that piano right now,"
Moretti threatened,
his finger resting heavily on the trigger,
"and unlock that ledger for us,"
or you will join your father in the grave!
Before Moretti could finish his sentence,
Cassian moved with terrifying,
superhuman speed.
He slammed his hand against Moretti's wrist,
snapping the bone with a sickening crack,
and disarmed the cartel boss in a fraction of a second.
Moretti let out a agonized scream,
falling to his knees as Cassian pressed the barrel of Moretti's own gun directly against the man's temple.
"Touch her again,"
Cassian whispered,
his voice dropping into a chilling,
demonic purr that made every guard in the room freeze in absolute panic,
"and I will feed your heart to the dogs in the bay."
Lord Sterling raised his hand,
signaling his armed guards to stand down before a full-scale massacre erupted.
"Enough!"
Sterling demanded,
sweat glistening on his aged forehead.
"If the girl can unlock the acoustic cipher,"
we will make a bargain.
"We will leave Boston forever,"
and transfer all rights to the shipping docks to Cassian.
"And if she fails?"
"If she fails,"
Sterling smiled maliciously,
"you both die in this pit tonight."
I looked at Cassian,
who gave me a subtle,
unwavering nod of absolute confidence.
May you like
"Lead the way to the keys,"
I said firmly.
