Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Symphony

Two hours later,
the medical team had finished dressing Cassian's shoulder wound in the private master bedroom.
The invading mercenary force had been completely wiped out or captured by Cassian's arriving reinforcements.
The estate was secure once more,
guarded by over fifty heavily armed men patrolling the perimeter.
Cassian sat on the edge of the large bed,
his chest wrapped tightly in white medical bandages,
looking down at the interrogation report Marcus had just handed him.
"The captured mercenary commander talked,"
Cassian said,
his voice low and cold as ice.
"Sterling is hiding at his private island estate off the coast of Maine."
"He has ordered his private yacht prepared to flee to Europe at dawn."
I sat beside him on the bed,
holding a damp cloth and gently wiping the dried blood from his collarbone.
"Then we don't give him until dawn,"
I said softly.
"The federal prosecutor has already verified the cipher ledger we sent via secure satellite transmission."
"Warrants have been issued for every remaining member of the Sovereign Circle."
"Federal marshals are raiding their offices as we speak."
Cassian reached out his uninjured arm,
wrapping it around my waist and pulling me into his lap.
I rested my head against his neck,
listening to the steady,
reassuring beat of his heart.
"You saved my life tonight,
Elena,"
he murmured,
his lips gently brushing against my forehead.
"A maid who became a queen,"
and a queen who protected her king.
"We protect each other,
Cassian,"
I whispered,
looking up into his dark,
handsome face.
"That was the bargain."
"No,"
Cassian corrected softly,
his fingers tracing the line of my jawline with incredible tenderness.
"That was not a bargain."
"That is love."
The word hung in the quiet room,
warm and undeniable.
For two long years after my father's death,
I believed my heart was completely dead,
frozen solid by poverty,
grief,
and endless humiliation.
Yet standing beside this fierce,
dangerous man who had risked everything to give me justice,
I felt my heart beat with a passionate,
overwhelming warmth that no melody could ever capture.
"I love you too,
Cassian,"
I confessed,
my voice thick with genuine emotion as I reached up to touch his face.
He leaned down,
capturing my lips in a deep,
exquisite kiss that tasted of victory,
passion,
and a future built on absolute trust.
When he finally pulled back,
his dark eyes were burning with a cold,
lethal determination.
"Tomorrow morning,"
he said,
standing up from the bed and sliding his dark jacket over his bandaged shoulder,
"we take my private helicopter to Lord Sterling's island."
"We will watch the federal agents drag him away in chains."
"And then,"
my sweet Elena,
"we will rebuild the Royal Opera House together."
"You will play the grand opening concerto,"
not as a hidden secret,
not as a grieving daughter,
"but as the greatest pianist this city has ever known."
I stood up beside him,
holding his hand tightly in mine as we looked out the window at the rising morning sun breaking over the stormy ocean.
The nightmare that had begun twenty years ago with fire,
lies,
May you like
and stolen music was finally over.
The silence had been broken.
