Chapter 5 - The Kingpin's Unholy Vow

The live broadcast cameras continued to roll as the full weight of the truth collapsed upon Senator Richard Ashcroft.

Federal agents and state troopers,

who had been watching the live broadcast from their patrol cars outside,

burst through the heavy glass doors of Blackthorn Manor.

They pushed past the stunned crowd of billionaires,

their badges gleaming under the chandeliers as they approached the disgraced politician.

"Richard Ashcroft,"

the lead federal agent announced,

his voice echoing over the chaotic noise of the room,

"you are under arrest for grand theft,"

arson,

evidence tampering,

and the murder of Samuel Weiss and Thomas Marlow.

"No! You can't do this to me!"

Ashcroft shrieked as iron handcuffs clicked tightly around his wrists.

"I am a Senator!"

"I own this city!"

"You used to own this city,

Richard,"

Cassian corrected smoothly,

stepping up beside the arrested politician and looking down at him with supreme disdain.

"Now,"

you own a six-by-eight cell in a federal penitentiary.

Vivian Ashcroft threw herself at my feet,

sobbing hysterically as she grabbed the hem of my velvet dress.

"Elena,

please!"

she begged,

her makeup ruined by tears of absolute terror.

"Please tell them to stop!"

"I didn't know anything about my father's crimes!"

"I was just following his orders!"

"Don't take away our home!"

I looked down at the woman who had mocked my curves,

ridiculed my cheap uniform,

and treated me like dirt under her shoe only hours ago.

I gently pulled the velvet hem of my dress out of her clutching fingers.

"You enjoyed the luxury built on my father's blood,

Vivian,"

I said,

my voice cold and completely devoid of pity.

"Now you can learn what it feels like to start from nothing."

The federal agents dragged Senator Ashcroft and his weeping daughter out of the ballroom,

their humiliation recorded by dozens of flashing cameras for the entire world to see.

The wealthy guests stood in silence,

completely awestruck by the total downfall of one of the most powerful families in Boston.

Cassian stepped up onto the stage beside the grand piano,

holding out his hand to help me stand up.

He took a small,

sleek leather folder from his inner jacket pocket,

opening it to reveal an official legal deed stamped with the seal of the city court.

"Earlier tonight,"

Cassian said,

his voice commanding the complete attention of every remaining person in the hall,

"I acquired all outstanding debts and mortgages associated with Blackthorn Manor and the Royal Opera House land."

He signed his name rapidly at the bottom of the deed,

before turning the pen around and handing it to me.

"With the arrest of Richard Ashcroft,"

his stolen assets have been officially seized and liquidated.

"I am transferring full,

unconditional ownership of Blackthorn Manor,"

the historic Royal Opera House estate,

and all of Samuel Weiss's musical copyrights back to their rightful owner.

He pointed to the signature line beneath his own.

"Sign it,

Elena Marlow,"

Cassian murmured,

his dark eyes shining with pride.

"Reclaim what was stolen from your bloodline."

My hands shook as I took the silver pen from his fingers.

I pressed the tip to the paper and wrote my name in bold,

clear script: Elena Marlow.

As soon as the ink dried,

the entire room erupted into an overwhelming wave of applause.

Maestro Falk led the ovation,

clapping forcefully as musicians and guests cheered for the rightful heir.

I looked down at the signed deed,

feeling a deep,

profound sense of peace wash over my heart.

My father's name was clean.

His legacy was restored.

His stolen empire was finally back in his daughter's hands.

Cassian stepped directly in front of me,

closing the small space between us until I could feel the rhythmic beat of his heart against my chest.

He reached into his pocket once more,

pulling out a breathtaking velvet ring box.

He opened it to reveal a massive,

flawless black diamond ring surrounded by a halo of micro-rubies,

glistening under the ballroom lights like a dark crown.

The crowd let out another collective gasp.

"When I walked into this manor tonight,"

Cassian said softly,

his low voice intended for my ears alone,

"I expected to watch a boring political gala."

"Instead,"

I watched a fierce,

brilliant woman shatter an empire with eighty-eight keys of ivory and wood.

He looked down into my eyes with an intensity that made my entire body melt with desire and awe.

"I promised this ballroom I would marry the woman who played the Impossible Concerto,"

he continued,

his gloved fingers lifting the heavy black diamond from its box.

"I am not a good man,

Elena."

"I rule an underworld built on blood,

power,

and fear."

"But I swear to you on my life,"

if you accept this ring,

no one in this world will ever mock you,

threaten you,

or hurt you again.

"Will you take my hand,"

and rule this city by my side?

I looked at the black diamond ring,

then up into the dark,

captivating eyes of the mafia boss who had stood by me when the whole world was against me.

I knew that accepting his proposal meant entering a world of danger,

mafia politics,

and high-stakes power.

But as I looked at him,

I realized I was no longer the frightened little maid hiding behind a silver tray.

I was Elena Marlow—the queen of the opera,

and the owner of Blackthorn Manor.

"I won't just take your hand,

Cassian Voss,"

I said,

a bold,

thrilling smile spreading across my lips as I extended my left hand toward him.

"I will help you run the entire city."

Cassian slid the heavy black diamond ring onto my finger,

its fit absolute perfection.

He pulled me into his arms,

his strong hands wrapping around my waist as he lowered his lips to mine.

The kiss was deep,

passionate,

and possessive,

sealing our unholy alliance before the flashing cameras of the world.

The crowd roared with applause,

their cheers echoing through the high ceilings of the grand hall.

The maid who had entered Blackthorn Manor in rags was leaving it as the undisputed queen of the underworld.

And as Cassian's lips lingered against mine,
