Chapter 5 - The Hunter Becomes the Hunted

The silence that followed the snapping branch was louder than thunder,
pressing against the thin walls of the cabin,
suffocating the air out of my lungs.
Claire slowly reached into her leather satchel,
her hand emerging with a sleek,
black handgun,
her fingers wrapping tightly around the grip.
"Get under the table," she whispered,
her voice stripped of all emotion,
cold,
and deadly serious,
"Do not make a sound,
do not move until I tell you."
I slid onto the dusty floorboards,
curling my aching body into a tight ball beneath the heavy oak table,
my eyes wide with sheer terror.
Through the dirty glass of the cabin window,
the dense forest looked like a wall of solid black ink,
impenetrable,
hiding whatever was creeping toward us.
Another footstep crunched on the gravel outside,
slower this time,
deliberate,
stalking the perimeter of our fragile sanctuary.
Claire moved with silent precision,
positioning herself behind the heavy wooden door,
raising the weapon,
her breathing shallow and controlled.
"Sarah," a voice called out from the darkness,
muffled by the thick wood,
but perfectly clear in the dead of the night.
It was David.
My heart plummeted into my stomach,
a scream rising in my throat,
choked back only by the sheer force of my will.
"I know you are in there, sweetheart," he crooned,
his tone dripping with that same fake affection he used in public,
the voice that always preceded a beating,
"Harrison's men tracked Claire's license plate through the toll cameras,
you really thought you could hide from the police?"
He laughed,
a hollow,
soulless sound that made my skin crawl.
"Come outside, Sarah," he continued,
his footsteps pausing near the front porch steps,
"Bring Mia,
we can go home,
we can pretend none of this ever happened,
I forgive you for overreacting."
He was insane,
completely detached from reality,
believing his own twisted narrative of power and control.
"If you do not come out," his voice suddenly dropped,
losing the fake sweetness,
turning into a low,
venomous growl,
"Harrison's tactical team is going to breach the doors,
they think you are a dangerous kidnapper, Sarah,
they have orders to shoot on sight,
to protect the child."
He had weaponized the police against us,
using Harrison's corrupted authority to authorize a legal assassination,
framing it as a hostage rescue.
Claire caught my eye from across the room,
shaking her head slightly,
silently telling me it was a bluff,
that a real tactical team would have already announced their presence,
not let the husband negotiate in the dark.
It was just David,
and maybe a few of Harrison's dirty deputies,
acting off the books,
desperate to clean up their mess before the FBI arrived.
"Go to hell, David!" Claire shouted,
her voice ringing with absolute authority,
"The FBI already has the recording,
they have the offshore accounts,
they have the coroner's report on Evelyn,
you are finished!"
A heavy silence fell over the porch.
Then,
the horrific sound of wood splintering echoed through the cabin.
David kicked the front door with immense force,
the hinges groaning,
the wood buckling under his heavy boots.
He kicked it again,
and the lock shattered,
the door swinging inward with a violent crash.
David stood in the doorway,
a dark silhouette against the moonlit forest,
a heavy hunting rifle gripped tightly in his hands.
Before he could raise the barrel,
Claire stepped out from the shadows,
her handgun leveled directly at his chest,
her eyes burning with the fierce protective wrath of a sister.
"Drop it," Claire ordered,
her finger resting heavily on the trigger,
"Drop it right now, David,
or I swear to God,
I will put a bullet through your black heart."
David sneered,
his eyes locking onto mine under the table,
May you like
a twisted,
predatory smile stretching across his face,
