Chapter 11 - The Blood on the Stone

The heavy,

jagged rock connected with a sickening,

wet crunch against the side of Chief Harrison's face.

Time seemed to slow down entirely,

stretching into an agonizing crawl,

as the sheer force of my desperate strike reverberated up my arm,

sending sharp,

painful vibrations through my exhausted bones.

The arrogant,

mocking smile vanished from his scarred lips instantly,

replaced by a look of profound,

stupefied shock,

as the sharp edges of the stone tore through his thick skin,

shattering the bone beneath with a horrifying,

audible crack.

Blood erupted from the wound in a dark,

crimson spray,

splattering across the cold,

damp walls of the ancient mineshaft,

painting the gray stone with the vibrant,

horrifying color of human violence.

Harrison staggered backward,

his massive,

armored body swaying like a felled tree,

a guttural,

choked scream escaping his throat,

as he desperately raised a hand to his ruined face.

The tactical assault rifle slipped from his grasp,

clattering loudly against the rocky floor,

the metal ringing out like a death knell in the enclosed,

claustrophobic space.

But the danger was far from over,

because as the weapon fell,

the massive police dog lunged forward,

its jaws snapping wildly,

driven into a frenzy by the sudden violence,

the smell of fresh blood,

and the sharp cries of its master.

The beast was a blur of dark fur and razor-sharp teeth,

aiming directly for my throat,

its terrifying,

muscular body launching through the cold air with lethal intent.

I closed my eyes tightly,

bracing for the agonizing bite,

praying only that my body would shield Mia from the carnage.

But the bite never came.

Claire,

moving with a speed and ferocity I had never seen before,

threw her entire weight forward,

tackling the vicious animal in mid-air,

her arms wrapping tightly around its thick,

muscular neck.

They hit the dirt floor together in a chaotic tangle of limbs,

fur,

and frantic struggles,

the dog snarling viciously,

clawing at Claire's jacket,

trying desperately to rip its jaws free.

"Get the gun, Sarah!"

Claire screamed,

her voice strained,

hoarse,

and filled with a desperate,

frantic panic,

as she fought to keep the snapping teeth away from her face,

using every ounce of her strength to pin the heavy animal against the muddy ground.

I dropped the bloody rock,

my hands shaking so violently I could barely feel my own fingers,

and scrambled desperately across the dirt,

my torn,

bleeding feet slipping on the slick mud.

I lunged for the discarded tactical rifle,

my fingers wrapping around the cold,

heavy metal of the barrel,

but before I could pull it toward me,

a massive,

heavy boot slammed down on the weapon,

pinning it to the floor.

I looked up,

my heart freezing in my chest,

to see Harrison standing over me.

His face was a ruined,

bloody mask of pure,

unadulterated rage,

his left eye swollen shut,

dark blood pouring from a massive gash on his cheek,

dripping steadily onto his tactical armor.

He was panting heavily,

his breath wheezing through his nose,

staring down at me with a murderous,

vengeful glare that promised absolute agony.

"You stupid,

worthless bitch,"

he hissed,

the words bubbling through the blood in his mouth,

his enormous hand reaching down to grab me by the throat,

his fingers closing around my windpipe with the crushing force of a steel vise.

He lifted me entirely off the ground,

my feet kicking uselessly in the empty air,

my hands tearing desperately at his armored wrist,

trying to pry his unforgiving fingers away from my crushed throat.

My lungs burned fiercely,

begging for oxygen,

as the edges of my vision began to darken,

black spots dancing across my eyes,

the sounds of the cave fading into a muffled,

distant ringing.

I could hear Mia screaming my name,

a shrill,

heartbreaking sound that pierced through the suffocating darkness,

but I was completely powerless,

dangling like a broken doll in the grip of a monster.

I was going to die here,

in this dark,

forgotten hole in the earth,

and I was going to leave my beautiful daughter to the mercy of these evil,

soulless men.

But then,

a loud,

sharp crack echoed through the cavern.

The heavy leather leash,

still attached to the struggling dog's collar,

had wrapped tightly around Harrison's ankle during the chaotic struggle,

and as Claire gave one final,

desperate heave to throw the dog aside,

the leash pulled taut with immense,

unforgiving force.

Harrison’s leg was violently yanked out from under him,

his balance completely shattered,

his massive body crashing down heavily onto the unforgiving stone floor.

His grip on my throat vanished instantly,

and I collapsed onto the dirt,

gasping frantically,

sucking in huge,

painful mouthfuls of the damp,

freezing air,

coughing violently as my bruised windpipe protested every breath.

Harrison roared in pain,

clutching his ankle,

which had twisted at a sickening,

unnatural angle beneath the weight of his own armored body.

Claire did not waste a single,

precious second,

crawling rapidly across the mud,

snatching her discarded handgun from the dirt,

and pressing the barrel directly against Harrison's forehead,

her finger tight on the trigger,

her eyes blazing with an unholy,

righteous fury.

"Move one muscle,"

Claire whispered,

her voice trembling with pure adrenaline,

her chest heaving,

"Breathe too deeply,

May you like

blink too fast,

and I will scatter your brains across this entire mountain."
