Chapter 13 - The Broken Monster

The sound of massive helicopter rotors chopping through the freezing morning air grew louder,

vibrating the loose rocks of the cavern floor,

a beautiful,

mechanical symphony of salvation echoing across the mountain valley.

Through the narrow opening of the mineshaft,

I could see the bright,

flashing strobe lights of a federal tactical chopper hovering just above the treeline,

its powerful searchlights cutting through the thick,

lingering mist of the early morning.

"They are here,"

Claire breathed,

pushing herself up from the dirt floor,

her legs shaking unsteadily from extreme fatigue,

tucking her handgun safely back into her leather satchel,

knowing she would no longer need it to protect us.

She grabbed the heavy,

military-grade flashlight from Harrison's discarded belt,

walking toward the entrance of the tunnel,

pointing the beam directly upward into the sky,

flicking it on and off rapidly to signal our exact,

precise location to the tactical teams descending from the sky.

Within minutes,

the heavy,

rhythmic crunch of dozens of combat boots echoed outside the cave,

accompanied by the sharp,

professional shouts of federal agents securing the perimeter,

sweeping the area for any lingering threats.

A team of men and women dressed in heavy,

dark tactical gear,

the bright yellow letters 'FBI' emblazoned across their armored backs,

swarmed into the tunnel,

their weapons lowered but ready,

their eyes scanning the bloody,

chaotic scene with clinical precision.

"Ms. Davis?

Mrs. Hayes?"

a tall,

broad-shouldered agent asked,

stepping forward with a medical kit already in his hands,

his voice calm,

reassuring,

and entirely professional.

"We are here,"

I rasped,

clutching Mia tightly to my chest,

refusing to let her go,

even as a female medic knelt beside us,

gently wrapping a thick,

warm thermal blanket around our shivering,

freezing shoulders.

They moved with incredible efficiency,

two agents immediately seizing the bound,

groaning Chief Harrison,

hoisting his massive body roughly from the dirt,

ignoring his muffled cries of pain as they dragged him out of the darkness and into the unforgiving light of justice.

"We need to get you out of here, ma'am,"

the medic said softly,

examining the deep,

purple bruises on my throat,

her eyes filled with a deep,

sympathetic sorrow,

"You have sustained severe trauma,

we have a medical transport waiting at the base of the ridge."

"Wait,"

I grabbed the medic's sleeve,

my voice a frantic,

desperate whisper,

my eyes searching the faces of the armed federal agents surrounding us,

"My husband,

David Hayes,

Harrison said he shot him,

said he left him by a tactical vehicle,

you have to find him,

he is still out there."

Special Agent Reynolds,

the man who had spoken on the radio,

stepped forward,

his expression grim,

serious,

and completely focused,

holding a digital tablet in his gloved hands.

"We found the vehicle, Mrs. Hayes,"

he said quietly,

his voice dropping to a low,

careful register,

"About a mile down the logging road,

it was abandoned,

but there was a massive blood trail leading away from it,

heading towards the old bridge."

My heart slammed violently against my ribs,

a fresh wave of terror threatening to pull me back into the abyss of panic I had just escaped.

"Is he dead?"

Claire asked sharply,

stepping up beside me,

her lawyer instincts kicking in,

needing absolute,

concrete facts,

"Did Harrison's bullet kill him?"

"We don't know yet,"

Reynolds admitted,

his jaw tight,

"Our canine units are tracking the blood trail now,

but the terrain is treacherous,

and he is heavily armed,

we need to evacuate you immediately before the situation escalates."

They helped us to our feet,

the medics supporting my weight as we slowly,

painfully walked out of the terrifying darkness of the mine,

stepping into the bright,

blinding light of the morning sun breaking through the clouds.

The mountain,

which had been a terrifying,

monstrous trap just hours before,

now looked almost peaceful,

the rain having washed away the darkness,

leaving the pine trees sparkling with cold,

crystalline drops of water.

We were loaded into the back of a heavily armored,

medical transport vehicle,

the doors slamming shut with a heavy,

reassuring thud,

sealing us away from the horrors of the wilderness.

As the vehicle began its slow,

bumpy descent down the rocky mountain road,

Mia finally let go of my neck,

sitting back on the leather seat,

her large,

innocent eyes staring out the reinforced window,

watching the trees blur past us.

The radio in the front cabin crackled loudly,

shattering the quiet hum of the engine,

a frantic voice yelling over the encrypted channel,

the words sending a violent chill down my spine.

"Agent Reynolds,

this is Alpha Team,

we have located the suspect, David Hayes,

he is cornered on the old suspension bridge over Blackwood Gorge,

he is bleeding heavily,

but he has a hostage,

May you like

I repeat,

suspect has a hostage."
