Chapter 5 - The Standoff in The Plaza Lobby

At three o’clock that afternoon,

I arrived at The Plaza Hotel in a sleek black town car.

I wore a tailored white suit,

dark sunglasses,

and carried a leather briefcase containing the formal divorce petition served by my legal team.

As I walked through the revolving glass doors into the opulent grand lobby,

the scene unfolding near the front desk was nothing short of a public disaster.

David was standing in front of the marble reception desk,

his suit jacket rumpled,

his hair disheveled,

and sweat dripping down his neck.

Beside him stood Chloe Dupont,

wearing an over-the-top designer dress,

clutching a velvet jewelry box from Zao Zero,

looking thoroughly embarrassed as hotel security officers surrounded them.

“Sir,

we have attempted to run all six of your provided cards,” the hotel manager said in a firm,

unforgiving voice.

“Every single transaction has been hard-declined by the issuing bank for fraud prevention.”

“The total balance for the suite reservation,

incidental holds,

and private dining charges is four thousand eight hundred dollars.”

“If you cannot clear this balance immediately,

we will be forced to contact the New York City Police Department.”

“I am telling you there is a mistake!” David screamed,

his voice cracking with embarrassment as affluent hotel guests turned to watch the spectacle.

“My wife froze the accounts by accident!”

“She is having an emotional breakdown!”

“I am a senior executive!”

“Just let me call her again!”

“She isn’t answering her phone,

David,” I said,

my voice echoing smoothly across the high ceilings of the lobby.

David whirled around,

his eyes bulging in shock as he saw me walking slowly toward them.

“Eleanor!” he gasped,

stumbling forward as if reaching for a lifeline.

“Oh thank God,

you’re here!”

“Tell these people there’s been a mistake!”

“Pay the bill,

Eleanor,

quick!”

“They’re threatening to arrest me!”

Chloe shrank back behind David,

trying to hide the diamond ring box behind her designer handbag.

I stopped two feet away from them,

looking down at David with absolute contempt.

“There is no mistake,

David,” I said loudly enough for every guest and hotel employee in the lobby to hear.

“I froze the cards because you stole my corporate credentials to rent a penthouse in SoHo for your mistress.”

A collective gasp rippled through the hotel lobby.

David’s face turned from red to ghost white.

“Eleanor,

shh,

don’t say that here!” he pleaded in a desperate whisper.

“We can talk about this privately!”

“We have nothing to talk about,” I said,

opening my briefcase and pulling out the thick stack of legal documents.

I thrust the papers directly into his chest.

“You have been formally served with a petition for dissolution of marriage on the grounds of fraud,

adultery,

and grand larceny.”

“What about my parents?” David stammered,

holding the legal papers as if they were burning his hands.

“Your parents have already been evicted from my estate,” I replied calmly.

“Their suitcases are currently sitting on the sidewalk outside the security gates.”

“You...

you kicked my elderly parents out?” he cried,

his voice squeaking.

“I didn’t kick them out,

David,” I smiled coldly.

“I simply sent them to your new penthouse in SoHo.”

“Though you might want to hurry,” I added,

checking my watch.

“Because I also notified your landlord that the lease was signed fraudulently,

and the lock locks are being changed as we speak.”

Chloe let out a horrified shriek,

dropping her shopping bags onto the marble floor.

“What!” Chloe screamed at David,

grabbing his arm violently.

“You told me you owned that penthouse!”

“You told me your wife was paying for everything!”

“She was,” I interjected smoothly,

looking Chloe dead in the eye.

“Until ten minutes ago.”

“Now,

neither of you has a home,

a credit card,

or a story to hide behind.”

The hotel manager stepped forward,

nodding to two armed security officers.

“Mr. Hayes,” the manager said coldly.

“Since your wife has explicitly stated she will not be settling your bill,

you have two minutes to cover four thousand eight hundred dollars in cash,

or we will press formal charges for theft of services.”

David looked at me,

then looked at Chloe,

then looked at the security guards,

his entire world crumbling around him in a matter of seconds.
