Chapter 1 - The Ringing Phone at The Plaza

The phone continued to vibrate in my palm,

buzzing like an angry hornet against my skin.

David’s name illuminated the dashboard screen of my car,

flashing in bold blue letters across the digital interface.

I sat on the shoulder of the Grand Central Parkway,

listening to the distant roar of jet engines taking off from JFK Airport,

knowing with absolute certainty that my husband was not on any of those planes.

I let the call go to voicemail,

watching the red declined transaction alert shimmer on my phone display.

Five seconds later,

the phone rang again.

This time,

I tapped the screen and brought the phone to my ear,

remaining completely silent.

“Eleanor?

Eleanor,

are you there?” David’s voice came rushing through the speaker,

laced with an edge of frantic panic that he tried unsuccessfully to disguise.

“I need you to call the bank right now,

there’s been a massive technical glitch with my cards.”

I took a slow,

deliberate breath,

adjusting the rearview mirror as I looked at my own calm reflection.

“A glitch,

David?”

“Yes,

a total failure of their banking network!” he stammered,

his breath coming fast and ragged over the line.

“I am standing here at a corporate meeting location,

trying to settle a critical business expense for my firm,

and every single one of my cards was just declined!”

I listened to the background noise behind his voice,

hearing the soft jazz music,

the clinking of crystal glasses,

and the muted murmur of a five-star luxury hotel lobby.

It was not the sound of an international terminal at JFK,

nor was it the hum of a Boeing 777 preparing for a trans-Pacific flight.

“Where are you right now,

David?” I asked softly,

keeping my voice smooth as silk.

“I’m at the airport lounge,

of course!” he lied without hesitation,

his tone sharpening into defensive anger.

“Where else would I be?

My flight is boarding in thirty minutes,

and I am trying to clear this charge before I lose cellular connection over the ocean!”

“That’s strange,” I replied,

tapping my fingernails against the leather steering wheel.

“Because Zao Zero Diamond Boutique on Fifth Avenue doesn’t have a branch at JFK,

and neither does The Plaza Hotel.”

The line went dead quiet.

The frantic rushing sound of his breathing instantly froze.

“What...

what are you talking about?” he whispered,

his confidence evaporating into thin air.

“I received the banking alerts,

David,” I said,

allowing a small,

cold smile to form on my lips.

“Fifteen thousand dollars for a diamond ring at Zao Zero,

followed immediately by a attempted booking at The Plaza Hotel.”

“Eleanor,

wait,

listen to me,

it’s not what you think,” he stammered,

his voice suddenly cracking with terror.

“It was a client gift,

a corporate transaction for the Tokyo branch executives!”

“You don’t buy client gifts at a high-end diamond boutique at ten o’clock in the morning,

David,” I said quietly.

“And you certainly don’t check into a luxury honeymoon suite at The Plaza for a flight to Tokyo.”

“Eleanor,

please,

don’t do this!” he begged,

his vanity completely collapsing.

“The hotel manager is standing right in front of me,

they are holding my luggage,

and my platinum card won’t work!”

“Then I suggest you find another way to pay,” I said.

“Have a wonderful flight to Tokyo,

David.”

Before he could scream my name again,

I pressed the red button,

May you like

ending the call,

and immediately blocked his number.
