Chapter 14 - The Gala of Reckoning

Julian Vance stepped out from the shadows of the press gallery,
holding high a thick stack of white papers,
his voice booming across the front rows of tables.
“Stop the presentation!”
Julian shouted,
trying to command the attention of the room.
“I have proof of fraud!”
“Eleanor Hayes’s firm used corrupted steel and falsified inspection records on the Grand Central project!”
“Here are the signed documents!”
A sudden,
shocked hush fell over the audience.
Reporters leaned forward,
cameras began flashing rapidly,
and several city officials gasped in surprise.
Chloe Dupont let out a breathless laugh from behind her pillar,
clapping her hands softly in victory.
David felt a wave of pure euphoria wash over him.
He took three steps out into the light,
preparing to watch my downfall with his own eyes.
I did not flinch.
I did not stop walking.
I stepped onto the stage,
took my place behind the podium,
and adjusted the microphone with complete,
unshakable calmness.
“Ladies and gentlemen,”
I said into the microphone,
my voice crystal-clear,
steady,
and completely devoid of any alarm.
“Please remain seated.”
“What you are witnessing is not a revelation of truth,”
“but a final,
desperate act of criminal fraud by three convicted individuals.”
I raised my hand,
and nodded to the audio-visual booth.
Instantly,
the massive thirty-foot projection screen behind the stage flickered to life.
Instead of showing architectural blueprints,
the screen displayed a clear,
high-definition video feed taken from inside an automobile two hours earlier.
The video showed David Hayes,
Chloe Dupont,
and Julian Vance sitting in a parked car outside the hotel,
passing around the forged documents.
The high-powered audio played loudly over the ballroom’s master sound system,
echoing off the walls in terrifying clarity:
“These forged inspection reports will ruin her,”
David’s recorded voice boomed through the speakers for five hundred people to hear.
“Once Julian drops them at the gala,
the press will destroy her before she can prove they are fake.”
“We will demand a two-million-dollar settlement to retract the claims!”
The entire ballroom went dead quiet.
David froze in his tracks,
the blood draining completely from his face until he looked like a corpse standing in a tuxedo.
Chloe gasped,
stumbling backward into a table,
knocking over a glass of red wine that spilled across her dress like blood.
Julian Vance stared at the giant screen above him in absolute horror,
the forged papers slipping from his trembling fingers and scattering across the polished floor.
“As you can see,”
I continued smoothly into the microphone,
looking directly down at David as he stood paralyzed in the center aisle,
“the documents being distributed by Mr. Vance are completely fabricated.”
“My firm’s actual inspection reports are certified by the State Department of Buildings and were uploaded to the public portal three weeks ago.”
At that exact moment,
the grand double doors at the rear of the ballroom swung open with a heavy thud.
Eight uniformed NYPD officers,
accompanied by four plainclothes detectives,
marched down the aisles in double file.
“David Hayes,
Chloe Dupont,
and Julian Vance!”
the lead detective shouted,
his voice carrying over the silent crowd.
“You are under arrest for felony attempted extortion,
corporate forgery,
criminal conspiracy,
and violation of a judicial protection order!”
Before David could make a single movement,
two heavy hands slammed onto his shoulders,
forcing him down onto his knees in the middle of the carpeted aisle.
The steel handcuffs clicked loudly behind his back.
Chloe shrieked as an officer caught her arm,
securing her wrists in plastic flex-cuffs as she wept hysterically.
“Eleanor!”
David screamed from the floor,
his face pressed against the carpet as five hundred of New York’s most prominent citizens watched in disgust.
“Eleanor,
please!”
“It was Julian’s idea!”
“They made me do it!”
“Please stop them!”
I looked down at him from the brightly lit stage,
holding my crystal trophy in one hand,
my expression completely serene.
“Take them away,
officers,”
I said softly into the microphone.
The crowd broke into a thunderous,
deafening ovation,
cheering and clapping as the officers dragged David,
Chloe,
May you like
and Julian out of the grand ballroom in heavy iron restraints,
their public humiliation finally complete.
