Chapter 8 - The Person Behind the Messages

I did not show panic.
Vanessa was watching too closely.
I placed my phone face down.
"Claire?" Vincent asked.
"Someone is watching the room."
Every head turned.
Sofia moved first.
She disconnected the conference system and began scanning the room.
Security locked the floor.
No one left.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"I told you."
"Told us what?" I asked.
"That Thomas wasn't the beginning."
Vincent stared at her.
"Then start talking."
She laughed softly.
"You still sound like our father."
His face tightened.
"Don't."
"Why? Does the word offend you?"
"Not now."
"Of course. Timing. Schedules. Control."
I saw it then.
The wound between them was real.
Vanessa hated Vincent long before she wanted his company.
She hated what he represented.
The recognized child.
The legitimate heir.
The son whose name opened every door hers had not.
But hate did not explain the watcher.
"Who recruited Thomas?" I asked.
Vanessa's eyes shifted to me.
"I did."
"Who gave you the Bennett reserve account?"
She hesitated.
Then: "My mother."
Vincent went still.
Vanessa continued.
"Rose had copies of old family records. She knew your grandfather created the reserve structure. She believed it was meant to protect a future wife because he regretted what Anthony did to her."
"So you knew about it before you joined the company," I said.
"Yes."
"Then who sent me the trust envelope?"
Vanessa frowned.
"I didn't."
That surprised everyone.
"Why would I?" she asked. "It weakened my position."
Elena looked at Vincent.
"If the trust document hadn't reached Claire, Vanessa could still frame her financially without activating the misconduct clause."
"Exactly," Vanessa said.
"So someone wanted Claire protected," Elena replied.
Or warned.
The unknown sender had told me not to sign anything.
Had exposed the account.
Had warned us Thomas was going to talk.
Had now told us to leave.
Not an enemy.
Not exactly.
"Who else knew?" I asked.
Vanessa looked toward Robert Hale.
The chairman went pale.
I followed her gaze.
Vincent noticed.
"Robert?"
He stood.
"That's absurd."
Vanessa smiled.
"Is it?"
Robert shook his head.
"I've served this family for twenty-three years."
"Longer than me," Vincent said.
"Exactly. I would never—"
The lights went out.
Someone screamed.
A second later, emergency lights came on.
Sofia shouted, "Nobody move."
The boardroom door unlocked.
Automatically.
Fire override.
Then the alarm began.
Smoke warning.
We were forced to evacuate.
In the stairwell, people pushed downward.
Vincent stayed beside me.
Not in front.
Not behind.
Beside.
On the twentieth floor landing, a man in a maintenance uniform grabbed my arm.
"Mrs. Moretti, this way."
I pulled back.
Vincent reacted instantly.
He shoved the man against the wall.
The man struck him.
Elena shouted for security.
The maintenance worker ran upward.
Security followed.
I leaned against the railing.
My abdomen burned.
Vincent touched my elbow.
"Are you hurt?"
"I'm fine."
"Don't say that if you're not."
I looked at him.
For years, I had said "I'm fine" because he never had time for any other answer.
Now he looked terrified of hearing the lie.
"I'm in pain," I said.
His face tightened.
"Okay."
He didn't tell me what to do.
He asked, "Do you want to stop?"
"Yes."
We waited on the landing until security cleared the stairwell.
The fire alarm had been triggered remotely.
No fire.
The maintenance uniform was found abandoned on the twenty-third floor.
The man escaped.
Back at the foundation office, Sofia examined the photograph sent to my phone.
It had been taken from a camera hidden inside the boardroom's wall display.
"Who installed the display?" Elena asked.
"Board facilities," Vincent said.
Robert Hale supervised board facilities.
He had disappeared during the evacuation.
His phone was off.
Vanessa swore under her breath.
"You knew," I said.
"I suspected."
"Why?"
She looked at me.
"Because Robert knew my mother."
Vincent stared.
"How?"
"He was my grandfather's attorney before Daniel Harrow."
That changed everything.
Robert had access to the old trusts.
The secret payments to Rose.
The Bennett reserve account.
The family history.
He knew Vanessa's identity before she ever joined Moretti Holdings.
"He found me after my mother died," Vanessa said.
"What did he want?" Vincent asked.
"He said I deserved what was stolen from me."
"And you believed him."
"I wanted to."
Her voice cracked for the first time.
She looked away.
"He gave me documents. Told me where the vulnerabilities were. Told me Thomas could be pressured."
"Did he tell you to use Claire?"
Vanessa hesitated.
Then nodded.
Anger rose inside me.
"You tracked me for fourteen months."
"Yes."
"You stole my passport."
"Yes."
"You cloned my voice."
Her eyes met mine.
"Yes."
"You blocked my call while I was bleeding in an ambulance."
Vanessa's face changed.
"I didn't know you were pregnant."
The words exploded inside me.
"Neither did I!"
Everyone went silent.
I stepped toward her.
"You heard me say I'd been in an accident."
She swallowed.
"I thought it was minor."
"Because you decided it was."
Her eyes lowered.
"I was angry."
"At me?"
"At him."
She looked at Vincent.
"But you were easier to hurt."
That was the most honest thing she had said.
Vincent went pale.
Vanessa's eyes filled, but I felt no pity.
"I wanted him to feel what it was like to lose someone because he didn't pay attention," she whispered.
My throat closed.
"You used my baby to teach him a lesson."
"No. I didn't know."
"But you created the conditions."
She looked away.
"Yes."
I slapped her.
The sound cracked through the room.
No one stopped me.
Vanessa touched her cheek.
"I deserved that."
"It doesn't begin to cover it."
Sofia's laptop chimed.
She had traced the anonymous messages.
Not directly.
But enough.
They came through a relay tied to an old Moretti Foundation server.
User credential: RHALE.
Robert Hale.
The chairman had been warning me.
I stared at the screen.
"Why would he expose his own scheme?"
Elena answered first.
"Because maybe it stopped being his scheme."
A new message appeared.
This one had no relay.
No disguise.
CLAIRE, I NEVER WANTED THOMAS DEAD.
MEET ME AT THE OLD MORETTI HOUSE IF YOU WANT THE TRUTH.
COME WITHOUT VINCENT.
Vanessa read it over my shoulder.
Her face went white.
"Don't go."
"Why?"
"Because Robert isn't protecting you."
"Then why warn me?"
She looked at Vincent.
"Because he wants you to destroy each other first."
I read the message again.
Old Moretti house.
The mansion where Vincent grew up.
The house his grandfather had abandoned after Anthony's death.
Then Vanessa said something that made my blood run cold.
"That's where my mother said Anthony died."
Vincent stared at her.
"My father died in Switzerland."
Vanessa shook her head.
May you like
"No."
And suddenly the oldest fact in Vincent's life was no longer true.
