Chapter 5 - What Thomas Tried to Leave Behind

Thomas Greer's death changed everything.

Until that moment, the stolen account had been a crime.

Now it felt like a threat.

Vincent wanted security around me immediately.

I refused.

"No Moretti security."

"They're vetted."

"So was Vanessa."

His mouth tightened.

"Then choose your own."

"I choose Elena."

Elena looked startled.

Vincent didn't.

"Done."

That was the first order he gave that night I agreed with.

By six in the morning, news of Thomas's crash had reached the company. Moretti Holdings issued a statement calling it a tragic accident.

Vincent did not approve the statement.

Vanessa did.

He stared at the email on Elena's laptop.

"She used my office to release this."

"Can she?" I asked.

"Under emergency communications authority, yes."

"Why did you give her that authority?"

He looked at me.

I almost laughed.

The answer was obvious.

Because he had given Vanessa pieces of his life one convenience at a time until she could move through it like an owner.

At 6:32 a.m., Elena received a secure email.

The sender was Thomas.

Scheduled delivery.

The subject line contained four words.

IF SOMETHING HAPPENS TO ME.

Inside was no message.

Only a link to a dead-drop server.

Sofia opened it in a sandbox.

There were fourteen files.

Thomas had been preparing to expose the scheme.

Not to the police.

To Vincent.

The first document was a ledger.

Thirty-one million dollars had passed through the Bennett reserve account.

But the money did not end there.

It was divided among shell companies, then returned into Moretti Holdings through consulting contracts and inflated acquisitions.

"Money laundering?" I asked.

Elena shook her head.

"Not exactly. This looks like internal embezzlement disguised as executive-directed strategic spending."

"Who benefited?"

Sofia traced the ownership.

The shell companies belonged to trusts connected to Thomas.

And Vanessa.

My hands went cold.

Then Elena opened the second file.

A letter.

Vincent,

By the time you read this, I may already be too late.

I helped Vanessa reactivate the Bennett reserve account.

I knew it was unauthorized.

I told myself it was temporary.

I told myself no one would be hurt.

I was wrong.

Thomas described how it began.

Eight months earlier, Vanessa approached him with evidence that Vincent had approved hidden payments to a consulting firm that did not exist.

Thomas believed the files were real.

Vanessa threatened to expose them unless he helped move money through a dormant family account.

Later, Thomas discovered the evidence was fabricated.

By then he was already implicated.

"Blackmail," I whispered.

Vincent kept reading.

Vanessa's objective was not simply money.

She wanted control.

She had been quietly purchasing shares through nominee entities while using stolen funds to finance the acquisitions.

If the scheme continued, she and Thomas together would control enough stock to influence a board challenge.

"She was trying to take the company," Elena said.

"No," Vincent replied.

His voice was low.

"She was trying to take my position."

The distinction mattered.

Vanessa did not want wealth.

She wanted Vincent's life.

I thought of her standing beside him in the hospital.

Of the way she had answered his calls.

Managed his calendar.

Chosen his meals.

Decided who could reach him.

Including me.

Then we opened the third file.

A folder named CLAIRE.

I did not want to click it.

Vincent didn't either.

Elena did.

Inside were reports about me.

My movements.

My calls.

My purchases.

My medical appointments.

My friends.

Even the hotel I was currently staying in.

"They've been tracking me," I whispered.

Sofia scanned the files.

"These were compiled by a private investigations firm."

"Who hired them?"

She found the invoice.

Vanessa Reed.

Vincent stood abruptly.

"How long?"

Elena looked at the first report.

"Fourteen months."

Fourteen months.

Before the fifteen-minute rule.

Before the fake account.

Before any of it.

Vanessa had been studying me.

"Why?" I asked.

No one answered.

Then I saw a photo.

Me leaving a fertility clinic seven months ago.

I had gone because Vincent and I had tried for a baby once.

Before the schedules.

Before his absences became normal.

The doctor told me stress might be affecting my cycle.

I never told Vincent because he had canceled dinner that night.

Under the photo was a note.

SUBJECT CONTINUES TO SEEK PREGNANCY-RELATED CARE.

Vincent sat down as if someone had struck him.

"You wanted a baby."

"I wanted a marriage."

His eyes closed.

The next report made the room silent.

Vanessa had investigated Vincent too.

Not his finances.

His childhood.

His mother.

His father.

His grandfather.

His former relationships.

At the bottom of one report was a handwritten note scanned into the file.

VINCENT RESPONDS TO CONTROL WHEN IT IS PRESENTED AS EFFICIENCY.

I looked at him.

He stared back.

She had not merely manipulated his schedule.

She had studied his weakness.

His father had been chaotic, unreliable, explosive. Vincent had spent his entire adult life building systems that made uncertainty impossible.

Vanessa made herself indispensable by becoming the system.

"She understood you," I said.

"Better than I understood myself."

"No."

I shook my head.

"She understood how to use you."

He looked at me with something raw in his face.

"And you understood me?"

"I tried."

That hurt him.

It should have.

We opened Thomas's final recorded video.

He appeared exhausted.

"If you're seeing this, Vincent, Vanessa knows I tried to leave."

He looked directly into the camera.

"The money is only part of it."

He swallowed.

"She has been preparing evidence to make Claire appear responsible for the entire scheme. The account. The authorizations. The shell transfers. Everything."

My heart pounded.

Thomas continued.

"She intends to trigger the marital misconduct clause in your grandfather's trust, force a public scandal, and create a board crisis. Claire would receive temporary voting control under the trust while facing criminal investigation. Her shares would then be frozen."

Vincent leaned forward.

Thomas's voice became quieter.

"During that freeze, Vanessa plans to force a special board vote."

Elena whispered, "She removes both of you."

Thomas nodded on-screen as if he could hear her.

"Claire is not collateral damage. She is the mechanism."

I felt suddenly cold.

Then Thomas said one final thing.

"There is another reason Vanessa chose Claire."

He looked away from the camera.

"I didn't believe it until I saw the DNA report."

Vincent went completely still.

Thomas looked back.

"Vanessa Reed is not who she says she is."

The video ended.

For three seconds, no one moved.

Then Sofia opened the last file.

A scanned birth certificate.

Name at birth: Vanessa Rose Moretti.

Father: Anthony Moretti.

Vincent's father.

I looked at my husband.

He stared at the screen.

May you like

Vanessa was not merely his assistant.

She was his half-sister.
