Chapter 2 - THE ALLIANCE IN THE SHADOWS
Inside the private town car waiting at the curbside of downtown Chicago,
my phone buzzed again.
It was a secure encrypted message from Julian Sterling himself.
He asked if the delivery of the paternity report had the desired theatrical effect.
I typed back a short confirmation,
telling him the performance was Oscar-worthy.
Julian replied with a laughing emoji,
proposing we celebrate over private champagne.
Twenty minutes later,
I arrived at the penthouse suite overlooking the glittering expanse of Lake Michigan.
Julian was standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows,
holding a crystal flute of vintage Dom Pérignon.
He turned around as the private elevator chimed,
his dark eyes sparkling with wicked amusement.
He walked toward me,
taking my coat and offering me a glass of the golden liquid.
We toasted to the complete and utter collapse of the Whitmore empire.
Julian confessed that planting Sloane in Grant’s orbit was his masterstroke.
He never expected Grant to fall for it so easily,
let alone abandon his loyal wife.
But Grant’s arrogance and blinding ego made him the easiest target in the corporate world.
Julian looked at me with genuine admiration,
praising my iron nerves during the boardroom ambush.
I reminded him that eight years of enduring the Whitmores' condescension had forged my steel spine.
We reviewed the master plan for the hostile takeover of Whitmore Holdings.
With the public scandal of the fake heirs breaking out,
their stock prices were destined to plummet by morning.
Investors would panic,
board members would flee,
and banks would call in their outstanding loans.
Julian had already acquired a massive stake in Whitmore debt through shell companies.
By tomorrow noon,
we would hold the keys to the entire corporate kingdom.
I set my empty champagne glass down on the marble table.
I told Julian that $28 million was merely the down payment on what they truly owed me.
He smiled,
pulling me closer by the waist and promising me everything they ever built.
May you like
The game had officially shifted from defense to total annihilation.
