Chapter 12 - GRANT’S DESCENT INTO MADNESS

Banished to the gritty,
unforgiving streets of downtown Chicago,
Grant lost his last remaining grip on reality.
He slept on a park bench near Millennium Park wrapped in a dirty wool blanket.
His designer shoes were worn out,
his feet blistered from walking miles between cheap soup kitchens.
He spent his days wandering past the glittering facade of Whitmore Tower,
which now bore a new name.
The towering skyscraper had been acquired and rebranded as the Sterling-Claire Global Corporation.
Massive silver letters on the glass facade spelled out my name alongside Julian’s.
Grant stood across the rain-slicked street,
staring up at the penthouse office that used to be his domain.
He muttered incoherently to himself,
convinced that a massive corporate conspiracy had stolen his birthright.
Alcohol became his only refuge,
drinking cheap whiskey from a paper bag behind a dumpster.
One afternoon,
while stumbling across Michigan Avenue in a drunken stupor,
he tripped over the concrete curb.
A passing delivery truck slammed on its brakes,
screeching loudly before stopping inches from his face.
The driver rolled down his window and unleashed a furious stream of profanities at the pathetic drifter.
Passersby stared with cold indifference,
failing to recognize the man who once graced magazine covers.
Grant scrambled to his feet,
laughing hysterically while tears mixed with rainwater streaming down his cheeks.
He realized too late that power,
wealth,
and status were fragile illusions built on sand.
He had traded loyalty,
love,
and genuine devotion for a fleeting,
hollow illusion of control.
Now,
he was utterly alone,
abandoned by everyone he ever trusted,
despised by his own family.
May you like
He pulled the tattered collar of his jacket around his neck and shuffled away into the freezing Chicago fog.
