Chapter 4 - Shadows Behind the Heavy Oak Door

The man standing in the doorway did not flinch when Ethan’s hand found the grip of the concealed Glock beneath his jacket.

He stepped fully into the light of the private lounge with a slow, theatrical arrogance.

It was Julian Sterling.

Madison’s thirty-five-year-old brother, and the ruthless enforcement arm of the Sterling syndicate.

Julian wore a tailored charcoal three-piece suit with a deep red silk pocket square that looked like fresh arterial blood.

His eyes were cold, dead black, resembling those of a shark circling wounded prey in open water.

Behind him stood two massive men with shaved heads and matching dark overcoats, their hands tucked conspicuously into their pockets.

"Easy, Ethan," Julian said, his voice dripping with condescending amusement.

"There’s no need to draw iron at a charity gala."

"You’ve already spilled enough blood on stage tonight without pulling a trigger."

Ethan did not remove his hand from his holster.

He stepped forward smoothly, subtly angling his broad body to completely shield me from Julian's predatory stare.

"You're trespassing in Cole territory, Julian," Ethan warned, his tone dangerously low.

"This lounge was reserved for private executive use."

"Get out before Marcus carries you out in pieces."

Julian chuckled softly, stepping past Ethan as if he owned the room and examining the crystal decanters on the mahogany bar.

"Marcus is currently very busy dealing with twelve different media outlets and your father’s personal bodyguards in the rotunda," Julian remarked casually.

"The entire hotel is tearing itself apart, Ethan."

"My sister is in the presidential suite sobbing into our mother’s arms."

"My father has already broken two crystal tumblers against the wall."

Julian turned around, leaning his hips against the bar counter, his dark eyes sliding past Ethan to lock directly onto my face.

The intensity of his gaze made the tiny hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

"And all of this chaos... for an assistant?" Julian asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Miss Bennett, isn't it?"

"Claire Bennett from Queens."

My breath hitched in my chest.

He already knew who I was.

He already knew where I came from.

"Don't look at her, Julian," Ethan barked, his voice vibrating with lethal authority.

Julian held up his hands in mock surrender, a cruel smirk playing at the corners of his mouth.

"I'm just admiring your taste, Ethan."

"She’s pretty, in a fragile, working-class sort of way."

"Though I must admit, my father is somewhat skeptical."

"He finds it remarkably convenient that a man who hasn't touched a woman since Julianna died three years ago suddenly falls madly in love with a girl who was hired seventy-two hours ago."

Hearing Julianna’s name caused Ethan’s entire posture to harden like tempered steel.

A vein throbbed violently against his temple.

"My personal life is none of your father's business," Ethan said through clenched teeth.

"It became our business the second you dragged our name through the mud in front of the press," Julian countered, his smirk vanishing instantly, replaced by a gaze of absolute malice.

"My father gave me a message for you, Ethan."

Julian stepped forward until he was standing merely two feet from Ethan's chest.

"The Cole and Sterling families are scheduled to meet at your father's estate on Long Island this Thursday evening for the formal reconciliation dinner."

"Harrison demanded that you bring your... new fiancée."

"If you show up alone, my father will consider the alliance permanently severed, and the files in our possession will be delivered to the Southern District Federal Prosecutor on Friday morning."

"And if you bring her?" Ethan demanded.

Julian looked past Ethan's shoulder, smiling directly at me with cold, gleaming teeth.

"If you bring her, my sister and I will spend the entire evening testing the strength of your extraordinary love story."

"Let's see if your little bird can survive in a nest of vipers, Miss Bennett."

"Have a lovely evening, both of you."

Julian turned smoothly on his heel and strode out of the lounge, his two silent enforcers following close behind like twin shadows.

The heavy door swung shut, and the lock clicked into place with a sound that felt like a cell door slamming shut.

The room plunged back into silence.

My heart was beating so hard and fast I felt dizzy.

"He knows where I live," I whispered, my voice breaking. "Ethan, he knows who I am."

Ethan turned to face me.

His expression was no longer cold or guarded; it was grim and intensely focused.

"Marcus is already dispatching two covert security teams to your family's home in Queens and your mother's hospital ward," Ethan said, pulling his phone from his pocket.

"No one will touch them, Claire."

"I give you my word as a Cole."

"Your word?" I cried out, the terror boiling over into rage. "Your word dragged me into a blood feud with people who look like they murder people for sport!"

Ethan stepped toward me and grabbed my shoulders, his grip firm but careful.

"Look at me, Claire."

I looked up into his fierce, storm-gray eyes.

"I am not going to let anything happen to you."

"Julian Sterling is a coward who preys on fear."

"He won't touch you as long as you are under my protection."

"But you have to make a choice right now."

He reached into his inner pocket and pulled out a sleek titanium black credit card and a small USB drive containing a banking token.

"The contract is simple."

"One million dollars clears into your personal escrow the second you walk through the doors of my estate tonight."

"Another million will be wired to your account the moment the seven days conclude."

Two million dollars.

My knees nearly gave out beneath me.

Two million dollars meant my mother could receive post-operative care at the finest clinic in Switzerland.

It meant my father would never have to work another day in his life.

It meant a completely fresh start for all of us.

"And if we fail on Thursday?" I asked, staring at the black card in his palm. "If Madison and Julian prove I'm just an assistant you hired off an agency list?"

Ethan held my gaze, his voice unflinching.

"Then you and I will go down together."

"Are you in, Claire?"

I looked down at the gold signet ring on his finger, then closed my eyes and thought of my mother's frail, rattling breath in Room 412.

I took a deep breath that tasted like pure adrenaline.

"Get your security team to the hospital first," I whispered.

"Then take me to your house."
