Chapter 12 - The Siege of Westchester

The iron gates of the Westchester estate were twisted metal wrecks hanging from shattered stone pillars.

Smoke was rising into the midnight sky, black and foul against the freezing rain.

Two black SUVs sat crumpled near the fountain, their chassis riddled with heavy caliber bullet holes.

The grand glass windows of the conservatory were completely blown out.

Fire leaped from the curtains in the first-floor drawing room, casting an eerie, dancing orange glow across the manicured lawns.

Our Maybach rammed through the burning wreckage of the driveway, stopping directly in front of the sweeping marble entrance.

Before the car had even fully stopped, Ethan kicked his door open.

"Stay behind Marcus!" Ethan commanded, raising his tactical rifle.

"Ethan, I'm coming with you!" I shouted, gripping the compact automatic he had given me.

"You stay in the rear or you die, Claire!"

We charged through the shattered front doors into a hallway filled with choking gray smoke.

The heat was suffocating.

Alarms blared in ear-splitting pulses from the ceilings.

Spent shell casings rolled across the white marble floor, clicking under our shoes like dry bones.

At the foot of the grand staircase lay two Sterling enforcers, motionless in pools of dark blood.

Suddenly, a volley of rifle fire stitched across the gallery above, sending plaster dust exploding into our eyes.

"Cole!" a voice screamed from the upper balcony.

It was Julian Sterling.

He had abandoned his tuxedo, wearing a tactical vest over his bloody dress shirt, his face blackened with soot.

Beside him stood three heavily armed mercenaries with assault rifles trained on the staircase.

"You're too late, Ethan!" Julian laughed wildly, coughing on the rising smoke.

"The vault door is already prepped with thermite!"

"Your little rat daughter is going to roast in that steel box!"

Ethan didn't shout.

He didn't curse.

He stepped out into the open foyer and fired three devastating rounds into the chandelier anchor above the balcony.

The massive brass ring snapped with a sound like a rifle shot.

The multi-ton iron fixture tore free from the plaster ceiling, hurtling downward like a descending star.

It struck the balcony with catastrophic force, collapsing the entire marble landing in a deafening avalanche of dust and stone.

Two of the mercenaries fell into the debris below, crushed beneath the weight of falling masonry.

Julian screamed as he scrambled backward into the smoke of the north corridor.

"Marcus! Take the east stairs and flank him!" Ethan ordered, his voice cutting through the ringing alarms.

"Boss, what about the fire?"

"Move!"

Ethan grabbed my wrist, pulling me through the burning archway toward the library wing.

The heat was blistering, scorching the hem of my evening dress as we leaped over burning timber.

We reached the heavy steel vault door hidden behind the mahogany bookcases of the north study.

A thermite charge was sizzling on the electronic keypad, melting the circuitry into molten slag.

On the floor beside the vault lay Mrs. Gable, bleeding from a deep head wound but breathing faintly.

"Mrs. Gable!" I dropped to my knees beside the elderly housekeeper, pressing my fingers against her pulse.

"The code..." Mrs. Gable whispered weakly, pointing a trembling hand toward the wall.

"The child... she's inside... but the air vents are pulling smoke..."

Through the thick steel door, I could hear faint, terrified sobbing.

"Daddy! Daddy, it's hot!"

Lily’s tiny voice sounded muffled, choked by carbon monoxide.

Ethan threw himself against the heavy vault door, his fingers clawing at the melted lock mechanism.

The metal was searing hot, burning the flesh of his palms, but he didn't even flinch.

"Lily! Step away from the door, baby! Step away!"

Ethan grabbed a fire ax from the emergency wall mount and began slamming the blunt edge against the heavy hinges.

Sparks flew in blinding showers, but the heavy tactical steel barely dented.

"It's reinforced with titanium deadbolts!" Ethan yelled, frustration tearing through his chest like a dagger.

"The manual release is routed through the secondary ventilation shaft in the basement!"

"I'm going down!" I said instantly, rising from the floor.

Ethan whirled around, his eyes wide with fury and panic.

"Are you insane? The basement is fully engulfed!"

"I spent five years crawling through boiler rooms and heating ducts in Queens tenements while my dad was working nights!" I shouted in his face.

"Tell me where the damn valve is, Ethan!"

He grabbed my face between his soot-stained hands, staring into my eyes with an emotion so raw it took my breath away.

"Under the main water junction," he gasped. "The red wheel with the manual bypass cable."

"Turn it counter-clockwise three full rotations."

"Don't die on me, Claire."

May you like

I didn't answer.

I tore the hem of my dress to free my legs, grabbed a wet linen napkin from a bar cart to cover my mouth, and plunged into the smoke-filled stairwell leading down into the fiery belly of the house.
