Chapter 3 - The Panic at Corporate Headquarters and the Collapse of the Series B Funding Illusion

Adrian scrambled into his downtown offices twenty minutes later, his hair slightly disheveled and his tie crooked.
He didn't even stop at his private executive suite on the forty-second floor.
Instead, he burst directly into the open-plan bullpen where his lead software engineers and financial analysts sat typing furiously.
"Marcus!" Adrian barked, spotting his chief financial officer near the glass-walled conference room.
"Get into my office right now."
Marcus looked up from his monitor, his expression grim and pale.
"Adrian, you need to see this."
"See what?" Adrian snapped, swiping his keycard against the glass door of his office.
"The bridge loan default notice from Sterling & Vance Capital hit the secure server five minutes ago."
Adrian froze with his hand on the door handle.
"That’s impossible," Adrian stammered, stepping inside the office and slamming the door behind them.
"That loan isn't due for another eighteen months."
"It had an extension clause tied to our partnership trajectory."
Marcus tossed a thick printed packet onto the mahogany desk.
"It had a subjective morality and executive stability clause, Adrian."
"And according to the audit initiated by Mara Sterling’s legal division, our operational cash flow has been flagged for fraudulent expenditure and misrepresentation of partnership assets."
Adrian stared at the pages as if they were written in an alien language.
"Fraudulent expenditure?" he whispered, his throat tightening.
"That was wedding planning and client entertainment."
"Which you billed as corporate research and development expenses under your startup’s tax ID," Marcus replied, his voice flat and devoid of any loyalty.
"Which means federal regulators and your secondary investors are going to see this audit by noon."
Before Adrian could formulate a response, his office desk phone began ringing relentlessly.
The red flashing light on the multi-line console blinked like a warning beacon.
Adrian reached out with a trembling hand and pressed speakerphone.
"Vale Technologies, Adrian speaking."
"Mr. Vale, this is Julian Vance from Vance & Associates Venture Partners," a cold, clipped voice echoed through the speaker.
"I am calling to formally notify you that our partnership committee has voted unanimously to terminate our pending Series B term sheet."
"Wait, Julian, please!" Adrian pleaded, leaning frantically over the desk.
"That term sheet was verbal agreement guaranteed by the Sterling family!"
"And the Sterling family representative personally informed our senior partners forty minutes ago that all backing has been permanently withdrawn," Julian replied coldly.
"Furthermore, we are requesting an immediate return of our initial seed allocation due to breach of fiduciary trust."
The phone clicked dead with a sharp, final tone.
Adrian stood motionless in the center of his expensive glass-walled office.
The panoramic view of the Manhattan skyline suddenly looked less like a kingdom and more like a cage.
His phone buzzed violently in his pocket with a text message from his mother.Adrian, why are my society club accounts frozen? Call me immediately!
A second text popped up immediately beneath it from his sister Camille.Did Mara cancel the Vogue feature? The editor just called and said our editorial spread has been pulled!

Adrian didn't reply to either of them.
He sank slowly into his executive leather chair, realizing with terrifying clarity that he had just dismantled his entire life because of three arrogant words spoken over truffle pasta.
