Chapter 10 - The Absolute Rock Bottom And The Realization That Every Luxury Was Built On Borrowed Time

Night had fallen over New York once again, wrapping the city in a blanket of cold autumn mist.

Adrian sat on a wooden park bench in Central Park, staring blankly at the glowing screen of his dying smartphone.

His battery was at three percent.

His bank accounts were officially frozen with a negative balance of over forty thousand dollars due to overdraft fees and reversed wire transfers.

His mother and sister had retreated to a cheap extended-stay motel in New Jersey, having sold off their remaining designer handbags and jewelry just to afford groceries for the week.

Every single person who had once smiled, applauded, and drank champagne in their honor had vanished into thin air.

It was all gone.

The bespoke suits, the luxury cars, the penthouse views, the venture capital funding, and the illusion of a brilliant future—all of it had evaporated because of one arrogant sentence spoken over truffle pasta.Don’t call me your future husband.

He replayed the memory in his mind, wishing with every fiber of his being that he could reach back in time and choke the words before they left his lips.

He had thought he was a king asserting his dominance.

In reality, he was just a beggar sitting on a throne of glass, foolishly smashing the only foundation that kept him above the ground.

His phone buzzed one final time before the screen flickered, went black, and died completely.

A single notification flashed briefly in the dark: an email from the county courthouse notifying him of the formal bankruptcy filing and impending foreclosure proceedings on his family's remaining assets.

Adrian buried his face in his trembling hands, his shoulders shaking as silent, heavy sobs echoed through the empty park.

Miles away, sitting high above the glittering skyline in her Tribeca penthouse, Mara poured herself another glass of vintage burgundy.

She looked out over the sprawling city lights, her reflection calm, serene, and completely victorious.

The debt had been settled.
