Chapter 8 - Dominic's Last Strike

The news of Christopher's denied bail and impending federal trial sent shockwaves through the financial markets.

Vextor Dynamics' stock price surged by twelve percent in after-hours trading,

with investors praising my decisive leadership and the complete cleansing of executive corruption.

However,

in the dark,

high-stakes world of corporate warfare,

a wounded animal is always at its most dangerous.

Dominic Lawson was not a weak fool like Christopher.

He was a seasoned,

ruthless operator who had spent two decades building an offshore financial maze designed to withstand federal scrutiny.

Three days after Christopher's courtroom breakdown,

I stood in my executive suite in San Diego,

reviewing the morning market reports,

when Arthur Vance walked in without knocking.

His expression was unusually grim.

"We have a major problem,

Victoria,"

Arthur said,

placing a thick stack of legal summons onto my desk.

I picked up the top document,

my eyes scanning the bold header:

IN THE UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT FOR THE DISTRICT OF ARIZONA: DOMINIC LAWSON V. VICTORIA VANCE, VEXTOR DYNAMICS, AND VANCE HOLDINGS INC.

"Dominic filed a retaliatory lawsuit?"

I asked,

my eyebrows arching slightly.

"Not just a lawsuit,"

Arthur corrected,

sitting down opposite me.

"He filed an emergency ex-parte motion for a federal injunction to freeze all voting control of Vextor Dynamics shares."

"On what grounds?"

"Extortion,

illegal wiretapping,

and tortious interference,"

Arthur explained quickly.

"Dominic's legal team is alleging that the clinic documents you used to force his loan into default were obtained through illegal hacking of private medical servers in Tucson.

They are claiming you manufactured the evidence of genetic fraud to engineer a hostile corporate takeover of Vextor and destroy his financial standing."

I leaned back in my chair,

looking at the legal complaint.

"He’s bluffing.

The medical records were handed to me by Evelyn,

who received them directly from the clinic's internal compliance officer."

"It doesn't matter if he’s bluffing in the long run,"

Arthur warned,

his voice tight with concern.

"The media caught wind of the filing twenty minutes ago.

Dominic’s PR firm just launched a massive national press campaign."

Arthur pulled out his tablet and tapped the screen,

showing me the front page of the Wall Street Financial Digest.

The headline read: SHADOW WAR IN TECH: NEW VEXTOR CEO ACCUSED OF ILLEGAL BLACKMAIL AND CORPORATE ESPIONAGE IN MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR FAMILY FEUD.

"The market is reacting violently,"

Arthur added.

"Vextor stock has already dropped eight percent this morning.

Institutional investors are terrified of a prolonged federal injunction that could freeze our upcoming enterprise platform release."

My desk phone rang.

It was a direct line from my private receptionist.

"Mrs. Vance,

I have a call on line three from a private,

unlisted number in Tucson.

The caller says his name is Dominic Lawson."

I looked at Arthur,

who gave me a cautionary nod.

I picked up the receiver and brought it to my ear.

"Dominic."

A low,

throaty laugh echoed through the speaker.

"Good morning,

Victoria,"

Dominic said,

his voice dripping with cold,

arrogant satisfaction.

"I hope you’re enjoying the morning news."

"You are playing a very desperate hand,

Dominic,"

I replied smoothly,

my voice betraying not a single drop of concern.

"Filing a frivolous extortion lawsuit will not stop the foreclosure on your Tucson villa."

"It already has,

my dear,"

Dominic sneered.

"The moment the judge signed the preliminary motion for review,

all foreclosure proceedings on my debt portfolio were automatically stayed pending the outcome of the espionage investigation.

Which means you cannot touch my land,

my clinic,

or my vineyards for at least eighteen months."

"And what do you expect to gain in eighteen months?"

I asked calmly.

"Eighteen months is an eternity in the tech sector,

Victoria,"

Dominic explained,

his tone sharpening like steel.

"Your board of directors will not tolerate eighteen months of stock volatility and legal injunctions.

They will panic.

They will force you to settle with me."

"And what is your settlement price?"

"Fifty percent of your voting shares in Vextor Dynamics,"

Dominic demanded without hesitation.

"Plus a complete release of all debt claims against my Arizona properties,

and a public apology clearing my name."

He paused,

letting his demands hang heavily in the air.

"You thought you broke me on my veranda,

Victoria.

You forgot that I have been fighting the Lawson family since before you were born.

You are out of your depth."

I listened to his triumphant speech,

looking out over the blue waters of San Diego harbor.

A small,

cold smile formed on my lips.

"Are you finished,

Dominic?"

Dominic sneered into the phone.

"I’m finished talking.

Now you can talk to your board while your stock collapses."

"Dominic,"

I said softly,

my voice carrying a chilling,

absolute calmness.

"You built your lawsuit on the assumption that the clinic records were my only weapon."

Silence answered me from Tucson.

"You forgot one critical detail,"

I continued,

leaning forward over my desk.

"I don't play corporate games for eighteen months.

I end them in eighteen minutes.

Check your inbox."

I tapped a key on my laptop keyboard,

transmitting a massive,

encrypted file directly to Dominic’s private email address,

as well as to the Chief of the FBI Financial Crimes Division in Phoenix.

On the line,

I heard the soft chime of Dominic’s computer receiving the file.

There was a long pause,

followed by the frantic sound of paper rustling and mouse clicks as Dominic opened the attached documents.

"What...

what is this?"

Dominic’s voice suddenly cracked,

the arrogant confidence vanishing instantly,

replaced by a rising tide of utter panic.

"That,"

I explained,

every word sharp as a diamond scalpel,

"is Michelle Vance’s signed,

notarized,

and sworn affidavit detailing your direct conspiracy to commit medical fraud,

paternity fraud,

and corporate extortion."

Dominic gasped loudly into the receiver.

"Michelle would never sign this...

I destroyed her!

She has no legal standing!"

"Michelle signed it two days ago in my conference room,"

I revealed.

"Along with full text message backups,

bank account routing numbers for your Cayman transfers,

and voice recordings of your private instructions to her in Las Vegas."

I stood up from my chair,

holding the phone close to my mouth.

"Your lawsuit against me relies on the claim that I hacked your clinic.

This affidavit proves that your own co-conspirator handed the evidence to me voluntarily.

Your extortion claim is dead,

Dominic.

And the FBI is currently reviewing the tax evasion charges."

Dominic’s breathing became ragged,

loud,

and panicked over the phone line.

"Victoria...

wait...

let’s talk about this..."

"We are done talking,

Dominic,"

I said quietly.

"Enjoy the morning news tomorrow."

I hung up the phone,

turned to Arthur Vance,

May you like

and said four simple words:

"Release the affidavit to the press."
