Chapter 16 - The Shadow of Mayfair

The golden rays of the early morning sun cut through the heavy fog hanging over San Diego Bay,

filling my executive suite on the top floor of Vance Tower with warm,

amber light.

I stood behind my desk,

wearing a tailored charcoal suit,

looking down at the sprawling city below me.

It had been three weeks since Harrison Sterling was arrested by federal agents in New York,

and the financial markets had finally begun to settle into a steady,

upward trajectory.

Vance Holdings now controlled over sixty percent of the regional market equity,

and Vextor Dynamics was preparing for its European distribution rollout.

Yet,

experience had taught me that when a titan falls,

the scavengers soon follow.

My private elevator chimed softly,

and Arthur Vance stepped out onto the marble floor,

carrying a leather portfolio under his arm.

His face was uncharacteristically solemn,

his eyes narrowed with concern.

"Victoria,"

Arthur began,

placing the portfolio onto my desk.

"We have a new complication."

I raised an eyebrow,

taking a slow sip of my black coffee.

"Harrison Sterling's legal team?"

"No,"

Arthur replied,

shaking his head.

"Sterling’s legal team is completely paralyzed by federal indictments.

This comes from London,

directly from Mayfair."

I opened the portfolio,

my eyes scanning the heavy parchment document inside.

At the top was an embossed gold crest belonging to Sterling International Trust,

a private entity completely separate from Harrison Sterling’s liquidated hedge fund.

"Julianna Sterling,"

I read aloud,

my voice calm and deliberate.

"Harrison’s daughter,"

Arthur explained,

sitting in the leather chair opposite me.

"She is thirty-four years old,

Oxford-educated,

and has spent the last decade managing the Sterling family's private offshore holdings in Zurich and Singapore.

Unlike her father,

she does not engage in public short-attacks or noisy media campaigns."

"She operates in the dark,"

I noted,

skimming the attached legal notices.

"She is claiming that prior to Harrison’s arrest,

he transferred a twenty-five percent voting block of Sterling International Trust to a secondary holding company registered in Liechtenstein."

"And that secondary holding company,"

Arthur added,

"holds convertible debentures issued by Christopher Lawson five years ago during Vextor’s early expansion phase."

I set my coffee cup down onto its saucer with a quiet,

crisp clink.

"Christopher issued convertible debt without board approval?"

"He signed the papers in London during a private conference,"

Arthur confirmed,

handing me a copy of a signed contract dating back five years.

"He was desperate for expansion capital,

and Harrison Sterling offered him fifteen million dollars at a below-market rate.

Christopher hid the transaction in our offshore subsidiary ledgers,

which is why our initial audit missed it."

I looked at Christopher's shaky signature at the bottom of the yellowed document.

Even five years ago,

his pathetic need to appear like a global corporate tycoon had laid the groundwork for his own destruction.

"Julianna Sterling is invoking the acceleration clause,"

I analyzed smoothly,

turning the page.

"She is demanding ninety million dollars in cash or twenty percent of Vextor’s primary equity by the end of the month."

"If she converted those debentures,"

Arthur warned,

"she could challenge your controlling voting block on the board."

I leaned back in my leather chair,

looking out over the shimmering blue ocean.

"Julianna Sterling thinks she can capitalize on her father's wreckage,"

I murmured,

a faint,

cold smile touching my lips.

"She thinks I am exhausted from fighting Christopher,

Dominic,

and Harrison."

"What is our play?"

Arthur asked,

watching me intently.

"Issue a formal invitation to Miss Sterling,"

I commanded softly,

my eyes gleaming with sharp,

unyielding focus.

"Tell her that if she wants ninety million dollars from Vance Holdings,

she must come to San Diego and collect it from me in person."
