Chapter 6 - The Desperate Plea

The rain poured relentlessly over the rusted roof of the Motel 6 near the San Ysidro border crossing,

creating a rhythmic,

deafening thrum that matched the chaotic beating of Michelle’s heart.

Inside the small,

dimly lit room,

the smell of damp carpet and spoiled milk hung heavy in the air.

The two newborn babies,

Julian and Clara,

lay together on the stained floral bedspread,

wailing in synchronized distress.

Michelle stood over them,

her hair matted,

her high-end designer clothes crumpled and filthy,

her eyes wide with pure,

unadulterated terror.

Every single credit card in her leather wallet had been declined at the front desk two hours ago.

Her bank accounts showed a balance of zero dollars.

Dominic Lawson had blocked her phone number,

his lawyers serving her with a restraining order that threatened immediate arrest if she stepped within five hundred feet of his property.

Christopher was behind bars in San Diego,

facing federal fraud charges and unable to post his two-million-dollar bail.

She was completely,

utterly alone.

She picked up her phone with trembling,

clumsy fingers,

her screen cracked from when she had dropped it in panic outside the Lawson estate in Phoenix.

She had only one contact left who possessed the power to save her children from starving on the street.

She dialed the direct private line of Arthur Vance,

my senior legal counsel.

The line rang four times before Arthur’s calm,

measured voice answered.

"Arthur Vance speaking."

"Arthur!

Please!

Don't hang up!"

Michelle sobbed frantically into the receiver,

her voice high-pitched and breathless.

"I need to speak to Victoria!

Please,

I am begging you!

The babies have no formula!

I have no money for the motel!

They are going to kick me out into the rain!"

There was a long,

searing silence on the other end of the line.

"Mrs. Vance is extremely busy managing Vextor Dynamics,

Michelle,"

Arthur replied coldly,

his tone devoid of even a shred of sympathy.

"She has no legal obligation to assist you or Dominic Lawson's illegitimate children."

"They are innocent babies!"

Michelle screamed through her tears,

clutching the phone against her ear so hard her knuckles turned white.

"Tell Victoria I will sign anything!

I will confess to everything!

I will give her every text message,

every email,

every wire transfer record between me and Dominic!

Just please...

don't let my babies end up on the street!"

In my executive office overlooking San Diego Bay,

I sat behind my mahogany desk,

listening to Michelle's panicked voice over Arthur's speakerphone.

I held my teacup steady,

taking a slow,

thoughtful sip.

I looked at the rain hitting the glass,

feeling no malice,

yet feeling no foolish pity either.

I leaned forward toward the microphone.

"Michelle."

The weeping on the other end of the line stopped instantly.

"Victoria?"

Michelle gasped,

her breath catching in her throat.

"Victoria,

please!

I’m so sorry!

I was stupid!

Dominic promised me money,

he paid off my gambling debts,

he threatened me!

Christopher was so easy to manipulate,

I didn't think—"

"Silence,"

I commanded softly,

my voice instantly cutting through her pathetic excuses.

"I do not care about your excuses,

Michelle.

Nor do I care about your regrets."

"Please..."

Michelle whimpered.

"I will send a black car to pick you up in thirty minutes,"

I said calmly,

setting my teacup down on its porcelain saucer.

"You will bring the children to the Vance Legal Building downtown.

If you are one minute late,

or if you attempt to contact the press,

the offer is revoked,

and you will face full accessory charges in Christopher's embezzlement suit."

"I'll be there!

I swear I'll be there!"

Michelle cried out.

Thirty minutes later,

the heavy glass doors of my private conference room opened.

Michelle stumbled inside,

looking like a ghost of the glamorous woman who had posed in baby boutiques with my ex-husband just weeks ago.

She carried the dual car seats with weak,

shaking arms,

her face pale,

her eyes rimmed with red.

I sat at the head of the polished conference table,

flanked by Arthur Vance and two armed private security guards.

I wore a sharp grey wool suit,

my diamond wedding band replaced by a platinum signet ring carrying my mother's family crest.

Michelle set the car seats on the carpet,

collapsing into a chair opposite me,

her hands trembling on the wooden table.

"Thank you..."

she whispered,

looking down in utter shame.

"Thank you for seeing me,

Victoria."

"You are not here for my mercy,

Michelle,"

I stated,

sliding a thick legal document across the table toward her.

"You are here for a transaction."

Michelle blinked,

looking at the document.

"What is this?"

"That is an irrevocable sworn affidavit detailing the full conspiracy between you and Dominic Lawson,"

Arthur explained,

handing her a pen.

"It outlines how Dominic approached you in Las Vegas,

paid off your illegal gambling debts,

and instructed you to seduce Christopher Lawson to infiltrate Vextor Dynamics and compromise the Lawson family inheritance."

"If I sign this..."

Michelle swallowed hard,

"Dominic's lawyers will destroy me."

"Dominic is already destroying you,"

I reminded her,

my eyes locking onto hers with cold precision.

"Dominic has cut your funds,

issued a restraining order,

and abandoned his own biological children to protect his reputation.

If you sign this document,

my legal foundation will establish an independent,

restricted trust fund for Julian and Clara."

Michelle’s head snapped up,

a glimmer of hope flickering in her desperate eyes.

"A trust fund?"

"The money will not pass through your hands,"

I clarified sternly.

"You will not receive a single dime for luxury apartments,

designer bags,

or trips to Macao.

The trust will be managed entirely by court-appointed trustees.

It will cover the children's housing,

medical needs,

nannies,

and elite education until they reach twenty-one years of age.

You will live in a modest townhouse in Oregon,

paid for directly by the trust,

under strict financial supervision."

Michelle stared at me,

tears welling up in her eyes once more.

"You're giving my children a future...

even after what I did to you?"

"I am securing the weapon that will execute Dominic Lawson,"

I corrected without hesitation.

"Your children are merely the living proof of his fraud.

Sign the paper,

Michelle,

or walk back out into the rain."

Michelle did not hesitate another second.

She grabbed the pen,

her hand shaking violent,

and signed her name on every required line of the thirty-page document.

When she finished,

Arthur picked up the signed affidavit,

stamping it with a official notary seal.

"It is done,"

Arthur announced.

I stood up from my chair,

smoothing down my jacket.

"The car outside will take you and the babies to a private medical facility in San Diego for a full checkup,

then directly to Oregon.

You will never return to California,

Michelle.

And you will never speak Christopher's or my name again."

Michelle nodded tearfully,

picking up the infant carriers.

As she reached the door,

she turned back to look at me one last time.

"Victoria...

Christopher really believed he was smarter than you."

I offered her a cold,

faint smile.

"Christopher believed whatever felt good to his ego,

May you like

Michelle.

That was his fatal flaw."
