Chapter 9 - THE TRUTH UNVEILED

I flew down the marble staircase, ignoring the glass and the chaos around me.

“Mom!” I cried, throwing my arms around her frail shoulders.

She hugged me back fiercely, burying her face in my shoulder. She was trembling, but when she pulled back to look at me, her eyes were clearer than they had been in years.

“Are you hurt, Emily?” she asked, her hands gently framing my face. “Did they hurt you?”

“I’m fine, Mom. I’m okay,” I promised, wiping a tear from her cheek.

Luca walked slowly down the stairs, holding Isabella’s hand. He stopped at the bottom step, looking at my mother with a mixture of respect and deep sorrow.

“Mrs. Carter,” Luca said softly.

My mother straightened up, leaning on her cane. She looked at the powerful mafia boss, and for the first time in my life, I didn’t see fear in her eyes. I saw relief.

“Luca,” she replied. “You look just like your father.”

Luca offered a sad smile. “So I’m told. I’m sorry it took so long to uncover what Vanessa forced you to do.”

My mother shook her head. “Catherine knew what was happening. Before she died, she came to my house. She told me to hold onto her silver watch as proof, just in case Vanessa tried to frame me.”

I gasped. “Catherine gave you the watch? Clara said Vanessa gave it to you as hush money.”

“Clara only knew half the story,” my mother explained gently. “Catherine gave it to me for protection. She told me that if anything ever happened to her, I needed to wait until Vanessa made her final move, and then bring the watch to you, Luca.”

Luca stepped forward, reaching out to gently shake my mother’s hand. “You protected my wife’s memory. And your daughter protected my child’s life tonight. The Moretti family owes you a debt we can never repay.”

“You don’t owe us anything,” my mother said. “Just keep my girls safe.”

“Girls?” I asked, confused.

Footsteps echoed from the hallway leading to the kitchen. Clara stepped into the foyer, escorted by one of Luca’s guards.

My mother turned. The cane trembled in her hands.

“Clara,” my mother whispered, tears spilling over her eyelashes.

Clara let out a choked sob and ran across the foyer, wrapping her arms around our mother. I watched them hold each other, realizing that Vanessa had kept them apart for three years with lies and threats.

I stepped closer, wrapping my arms around both of them. For the first time in my life, I had a sister. My family was finally whole.

Luca watched us, his dark eyes soft. He knelt down beside Isabella.

“Bella,” Luca said gently. “How would you feel about Emily not being our maid anymore?”

Isabella’s eyes widened in panic. She grabbed my apron. “No! Emily can’t leave! I won’t let her!”

Luca chuckled, a warm, rich sound that echoed beautifully in the grand foyer.

“She’s not leaving, Principessa,” Luca promised. He stood up and walked over to me, gently pulling Isabella along with him.

Luca reached out and carefully untied the strings of my white housekeeping apron at my waist. I stood perfectly still, my breath caught in my throat, as he pulled the fabric away and let it fall to the floor.

“Emily Carter,” Luca said, his voice deep and resonating with absolute sincerity. “You are no longer an employee of this house. The mortgage on your mother’s home was paid in full an hour ago by the Moretti Foundation. Your sister has a permanent trust set up in her name.”

I covered my mouth, tears of overwhelming joy blurring my vision. “Luca… you didn’t have to do that.”

“I take care of my family,” Luca said simply. He reached out and gently cupped my cheek, his thumb brushing away a tear. “And you, Emily, are family.”

The heavy, oppressive darkness that had ruled this mansion for three years was finally gone. Vanessa was in federal custody, the Falcones were destroyed, and the truth had set all of us free.

Isabella wrapped her arms around my waist, burying her face in my sweater. “I love you, Emily.”

I hugged her back, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. “I love you too, sweetie.”

As I stood there in the grand foyer, surrounded by my mother, my sister, a brave little girl, and a man who looked at me like I was the center of his universe, I knew my life was never going to be the same.
