Chapter 8 - THE SHATTERED GLASS

The deafening crash of breaking glass echoed through the mansion.

I dropped to the floor, covering my head as shards of colored glass rained down the hallway.

Before the Falcone soldier could pull the trigger, a dark figure vaulted through the shattered window frame. It was Luca. He hit the carpet rolling, bringing his weapon up in one fluid, lethal motion.

Two silenced shots snapped through the air.

Both Falcone soldiers dropped to the floor, incapacitated before they even realized what had happened.

Vanessa shrieked, backing away from Isabella and throwing her hands in the air. The arrogant cruelty that had defined her for two years vanished, replaced by sheer, animalistic terror.

Luca slowly stood up. He didn’t look at the men on the floor. His dark eyes were locked entirely on Vanessa.

“You came back to my house,” Luca said. His voice wasn’t loud. It was a deadly, vibrating whisper that chilled me to the bone.

Vanessa scrambled backward until her back hit the wall. “Luca, listen to me! Leo Falcone made me do it! He bailed me out from Miller and told me if I didn’t get the locket, he would kill me!”

Luca walked toward her, his gun lowered but his posture screaming violence.

“You threatened my daughter,” Luca stated softly.

“I was desperate!” Vanessa sobbed, sliding down the wall to her knees. “I didn’t want to hurt her! Please, Luca! I loved you!”

“You don’t know the meaning of the word,” Luca said, stepping past her with absolute disgust.

He walked directly to Isabella, who was sobbing by the banister. Luca dropped to his knees and pulled his daughter into his arms, burying his face in her dark hair.

“I’ve got you, Bella,” he murmured fiercely. “You’re safe.”

I pushed myself up from the floor, my knees shaking violently. I walked over to them, and Isabella immediately reached out a hand to me. I knelt beside Luca, wrapping my arms around both of them.

For a brief, agonizing moment, the three of us held each other in the wreckage of the hallway.

“Emily,” Luca whispered, looking at me over his daughter’s shoulder. “You came inside. You didn’t stay in the car.”

“I couldn’t let her hurt Isabella,” I said, my voice trembling.

Luca’s expression shifted. The hardened mafia boss looked at me with a profound, overwhelming gratitude.

He gently pulled back from Isabella. “Principessa, I need you to do something for me. I need you to open the locket Mommy gave you.”

Isabella sniffled, nodding. Her small, trembling fingers fumbled with the tiny silver clasp.

The locket snapped open.

Inside, tucked behind a tiny picture of Catherine, was a small, folded piece of micro-paper.

Luca took it carefully. He unfolded it under the hallway sconce lighting.

It was a list of offshore bank accounts and routing numbers. The direct financial link between Leo Falcone, the corrupt police chief, and the hit on Catherine Moretti. It was enough to dismantle the Falcone empire overnight and send Chief Miller to federal prison.

“It’s over,” Luca whispered, closing his eyes.

Suddenly, the heavy front doors downstairs burst open.

Dozens of armed men flooded into the foyer. For a terrifying second, I thought the Falcones had sent an army.

But then I saw Michael leading them. These were Moretti men.

Michael ran up the stairs, taking in the scene—the shattered window, the bleeding soldiers, and Vanessa cowering in the corner.

“We have the perimeter secured,” Michael breathed, his eyes wide. “The FBI just raided the Falcone compound. Someone tipped them off.”

Luca looked at the micro-paper in his hand, a ghost of a smile touching his lips. “Catherine tipped them off. This paper is a copy. She mailed the original to the feds three years ago on a time delay.”

Vanessa let out a hollow, defeated wail. She knew she had lost everything.

Michael signaled two of his men. “Take her. Hand her over to the federal agents outside. Let her rot.”

As they dragged Vanessa away, kicking and screaming, the oppressive, toxic energy that had suffocated the mansion for eleven months finally lifted.

Luca stood up, helping me to my feet. He looked down at me, his dark eyes intense and incredibly warm.

“You protected my family today, Emily,” Luca said quietly. “You risked your life for my daughter.”

I looked at Isabella, who was holding my hand tightly. “She’s worth it.”

“So are you,” Luca murmured.

Before I could process what he meant, Michael cleared his throat.

“Luca,” Michael said softly. “We have a visitor downstairs. She says she’s here for Emily.”

I frowned, turning toward the staircase.

Standing in the foyer, leaning heavily on a wooden cane, was an older woman with silver hair and kind, weary eyes.

“Mom?” I gasped.
